For the Week of September 17, 2007

2007-08 REGULAR SEASON BEGINS THIS WEEKEND

TEXAS TECH COMES TO TOWN TO PLAY OKLAHOMA

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - The University of Oklahoma® hockey club (0-0-0) starts off the 2007-2008 regular season with a pair of games against the Red Raiders from Texas Tech University (0-0-0). Oklahoma has an all-time record of 2-0-0 against Tech, dating back to October 2004 when the two teams played in Oklahoma City.

LAST OU HOCKEY GAMES – Oklahoma has not played since last March when they finished the 2006-2007 season with a dominating 7-2 win against Ohio University at the ACHA National Championship Tournament in Youngstown, Ohio.

RANKINGS – The Sooners finished last season ranked 9th in the nation in the final 2006-2007 ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking. The 2007-2008 pre-season ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking is expected to be released this Friday.

PREVIEWING THE SOONERS – Oklahoma returns 17 players from last season’s squad that went 31-5-0 and finished 9th in the nation. The Sooners’ 28-man roster is well balanced as it is comprised of five seniors, seven juniors, seven sophomores and nine freshmen. The OU Hockey roster has a decided Lone Star slant in a geographic sense as ten players hail from Texas. Four players come from Oklahoma, three from both Arizona and Alaska and two from Illinois. Colorado, Wisconsin, California, Michigan, South Carolina and Minnesota have individual representatives on the OU Hockey roster.

Among the offensive players returning are OU's leading goal scorers for the past two seasons, Adrian Borchgrevink (Kenai, AK) and Matt Pangrac (Decatur, IL). Borchgrevink set a single season OU Hockey goal scoring record last season with 28 goals. Pangrac led the Sooners in goals two years ago with 15. Other key offensive returnees include Keith Denton (Vail, CO), who had 13 goals and 19 assists last season, Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX) with 18 goals and 18 assists, and Luke Rose (Norman, OK) with 14 goals and 10 assists. Top centerman Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK), who netted 13 goals and 27 assists, is still recovering from an arm injury suffered in the last game of the season and is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season. On the blueline, the Sooners return rock-solid defensemen Mark Tylka (Wisconsin Dells, WI) (4G, 16A, 20 pts), Trey Snow (Coppell, TX) (1-23-24) and Trevor Hallberg (Flagstaff, AZ) (3-9-12). Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN) returns for his sophomore season in goal for the Sooners, sporting a 3-0-0 win-loss record, a 3.16 goals against average and a .825 save percentage in almost 209 minutes of action last season.

Head Coach Larry Donovan's recruiting efforts look to pay huge dividends for the Sooners this season. Sean McCauley (Naperville, IL) joins OU from the Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets of the USHL. Forwards Daniel Sirra (Anchorage, AK), Chris Nicolaou (Dallas, TX) and Jarrod Yost (Murphy, TX) join the Sooners with loads of NAHL experience. Smooth skating defensemen Shawn Hayden (Allen, TX) and Daryl Dee (Garland, TX) also have plenty of NAHL experience. Austin Miller (Dallas, TX) joins the Sooners blueline corps after transferring from NCAA D1 Providence.

SCOUTING THE RED RAIDERS – Texas Tech competes in ACHA’s Division 2 West Region and finished last season ranked 11th in the region. The Red Raiders are coached by former WPHL and CHL player Paul Fioroni. Fioroni has assembled an ambitious schedule for Tech this season, playing 43 total games including eight games against ACHA D1 opposition. Fioroni just selected his 26 player roster this past weekend. Forward Kevin Mayoux is expected to lead the Red Raiders again this season. Last season, Mayoux scored 57 goals and 33 assists for 90 total points in only 32 games. Wes Shirley (36-24-60), Shawn Seidel (13-17-30) and J.P. Pruneau (8-20-28) are expected to be major contributors for Tech this season. Coach Fioroni and Mayoux will be part of the ACHA D2 Select Team that will tour Europe from December 27, 2007 to January 4, 2008 to play five games against teams from Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
