If the $5 beers weren't enough, I'm pretty sure someone got shot tonight about 50 feet from where I was at the time. It was nearly midnight, so my party was leaving the premises, when we decided to stop at a funnel cake cart. Behind us, a short distance away, muffled by the closed gaming tent in between the scene and where we were standing, we heard a loud *pop* and then people were running in all directions. Cops show up to haul away some drunk redneck who was running around acting all ****ed off and yelling, but I'm certain he wasn't the one who fired the round. The girls in the group were scared so we left and I didn't get to find out if it really was a gunshot or if someone was hit.

God, I hate the State Fair. I know, I bring it on myself by going in the first place, but this is the first time anything has happened like that while I was there. And I thought the most I had to deal with was the jorts-wearing, mullet-sporting, teeth-missing, dip-chewing, NASCAR-loving crowd or idiotic high school kids. Not the case anymore, apparently.

Heh. Soon it will be like Six Flags over Saxet. Took the family unit there a few years ago. I thought for sure we'd be mugged before we could get outta there.

Perhaps you should try the Tulsa State Fair. Gunshot-free since '93.

I refuse to go to the Tulsa State Fair until Tulsa becomes a State. :D

I loved the Tulsa fair as a kid, but mostly for the Bell's rides. No hope of that anymore.

Since I moved to Tulsa from more of the OKC area I have had this question. Why is it the "Tulsa State Fair" vs just the "Tulsa Fair". No other towns in Oklahoma label their fair this way. I have never lived in another state. Do other states have muliple "State" fairs... I have always wanted to know the source of the name. I proposed this question to a local news guy that handles these odd kinds of questions, Rick Wells, I never got a response back.

Maybe I can shed some light on your problem.

I think it has to do with intent.

"The State Fair in Tulsa" just doesn't have that ringing sound of success.

Maybe we could change it though...

"The Tulsa>okc State Fair"

How's that grab ya? ;)

Denton has a North Texas State Fair.

i haven't been to the fair since 1984.

back then, it was a bunch of dudes sporting their mullets and Scorpions T-shirts hanging out with their old ladies dressed to kill in holey shorts and halter tops showing most of their fresh bruises.

lots of confederate flag paraphernalia to win on the midway, too.

the corne d'abondance of aromas was amazing: weed, natty light, BO, and indian tacos.

i bet it's completely different now.

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

The Tulsa State Fair is the biggest bunch of skanks this side of the nearest Indian Casino.

The best way to go get your fix (corndogs, fried oreos, turkey legs et al) is to go during the week over your lunch hour.

Oklahoma like many states have more than one state fair.
A fair was basically an aggy competition.
And now of course it is more than that with all the rides and muggings now.

So a county fair would be only people from your county could compete.
And a state fair would allow anyone from the state to compete.

And by the way Tulsa has a higher attendance in their state fair last year than OKC did. It kind of goes back and forth in who is the largest.

*edit
Tulsa fair is older by the way by a few years.

One of our buddies is a cop. He absolutely hates state fair time. God awful hours and a huge influx of out of state gang bangers coming into town.

Friday and Saturday nights we usually stay inside.

Since we live within 1 1/2 miles south of the Fairgrounds....you can smell the stench of skank in the air....it's horrible. :D

Took the kids on Friday morning and had a great time. We're not fair people but the kids wanted to go and all of us had a good time. I purchased our beer for $3.50. I believe we drank 3-4 Rolling Rocks. The Indian Taco's were very disappointing and not as good as we remembered when we were younger living in Oklahoma. The corn dogs were good, the funnel cakes alright, but the cinnamon rolls stole the show. Damn they were awesome!

I really like that the fair had a separate space for the little ones to do there thing and the place appeared to be pretty clean.

Trust me, go to the state fair by 9 a.m. Eat cinnamon rolls while the air is cool, check out everything without any crowds. Then, chow down on the real food around 11:30 and get to your car (parked very close to the entrance BTW) by 1:00. As a finale, you can make jokes about all the riff-raff walking in while you are walking out.

I have done this for the last 8 years and, no way, would I go on a weekend night. If you have kids, plan on spending a while at Agtropolis. Nice, clean people and on the opposite end of the trashy Midway.

Cinnamon rolls are good, but the Wisconsin cheese alone makes it worth the trip. Deep fried Oreo's also rawk.
