Who is better? I give a slight edge to Duvall.

Gene

His role as Little Bill Daggett in Unforgiven, and the blind monk in Young Frankenstein

I've always liked Gene Hackman, however, Robert Duvall is beyond awesome. He is one those trancendental actors who just becomes the character he is portraying, like DeNiro. I'd put Gary Oldman and Meryl Streep in that catgory as well.

Gene is only a hair behind though...esp. liked him in The Firm and, of course, as Lex Luthor.

Duvall easily.

Hackman, IMO, suffers from the same affliction that Nicholson does, he makes every role the same character. Just like Jack, he's awesome at it, but Duvall becomes the character, the character doesn't become Duvall.

Duvall wins based solely on westerns. While Hackman gets major, major props for Unforgiven, much is negated by Wyatt Earp and The Quick and the Dead....you get outgunned by Sharon Stone, you lose.

Plus, Duvall was in To Kill a Mockingbird, True Grit and Bullitt

It is still hard not to put Gene up there for Hoosiers though.

Duvall is a great actor but some of his roles can be boring. Hackman can play any character and succeed in it. All his movies are exciting. Hackman also does a great job for being the voice over in the Lowe's commercials. Hackman also has one more Oscar than his good friend Duvall.

I will agree that the score is horrible, but Gene didn't do that. His performance is very good. I think the film is a little more low key and understated than FNL or GR. Thus, much better.

No love for 'The Apostle' yet. That surprises me.

Duvall all the way.

Now don't get me wrong, Hackman's done some righteous stuff. Unforgiven is a personal fave. Who can forget Popeye Doyle in 'The French Connection'? The kicker is, I'll go see a movie with EITHER of 'em in it just because they're in it.

But Duvall has it on Gus McCrae alone.

I love both of their works...great actors, those two. Phenomenal. They both amaze me and make my heart flutter.

Duvall served honorably as a Soldier in the United States Army. Additionally, he played a good Marine - "The Great Santini". However, if it's a contest, give it to Hackman. He IS a Marine.

Case closed, IMO. Ooh-Rah!
