194 years ago, on this day In the first unqualified defeat of a British naval squadron in history, U.S. Captain Oliver Hazard Perry leads a squadron of nine American ships to victory over a squadron of six British warships at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.

The battle was closely contested for hours, and Perry's flagship USS Lawrence was reduced to a defenseless wreck. He then transferred his flag to USS Niagara and sailed directly into the British line, firing broadsides and forcing the British to surrender.

This flag flew aboard Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship "Lawrence" while commanding the American squadron in the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10,1813. Perry had named his ship after Captain James Lawrence, the hero of an earlier sea battle off New England whose dying words were "Don't Give Up The Ship".

Perry had won a complete victory at the cost of 27 Americans killed and 96 wounded; British casualties were 40 dead and 94 wounded. After the battle, Perry sent a famous dispatch to U.S. General William Henry Harrison that read:

"We have met the enemy, and they are ours." -- Capt. Oliver Hazard Perry dispatch to Gen. Harrison. 9.10.1813

Oliver Hazard Perry. Scion of a great US Navy family. His descendents would open Japan to US trade and travel first to the Pole.

The Battle of Lake Erie forced the British to abandon Detroit, ensuring U.S. control over Lake Erie and the territorial northwest. This is probably a good thing because had the Brits kept Detroit, I shudder to think what kind of cars we would have been driving 150 years later.
