How would one go about trying to sell their shirt ideas to a store? I have it out on CafePress already but I know it would sell really well at Husker specialty stores. There are no other shirts of this kind being sold at any of them. I have looked and looked and looked. That's really why I designed my own. I am completely lost when it comes to this type of thing, though. I have no idea where to start.

not sure, but watch the copyright infringement if it's husker related.

Thanks. I was just thinking of that as I opened your reply. It looks like just the University logo is copyrighted. :D I'm going to try and talk to someone in the marketing and licensing deparment just to make sure.

Is it even possible to copyright a red capital "N?" Seems pretty public domain-y to moi.

exhibit "A":

N

I don't know about just one letter, but you can definitely copyright two letters. We hold the copyright for "BU" and Boston U. has tried suing, pleading, and negotiating with us for the right to put "BU" on their merchandise to no avail.

Apparently it's not even the font style that makes a difference, just the letters "BU."

How about NB? State abreviation?

Some guy over here in Arkansas made up some shirts that showcased the lack of accomplishments by the UA coach, Houston Nutt. It featured a caricature of Nutt and mentioned his name.

He was told by the UA licensing department that UA held the rights to the coach's likeness and name and if the fan didn't quit printing the shirts AND turn over to the UA all of the shirts already printed that the fan would lose his season tickets and be subject to further prosecution.

So, you better make sure you clear everything with the NU licensing/marketing department first, Hskrgrl...

Good Luck!

Heaven forbid an athletic dept. looses its riches from t-shirts.

Well, you guys have the letters OU in crimson copyrighted. And Nebraska's logo is a little different than N. It looks like this... http://klin.com/news/media/Huskers.jpg

My shirt design doesn't have the N on it, though. It does have "Husker" on it. I'm going to talk to the head of the licensing department at UNL hopefully tomorrow and find out for sure what I can and cannot do. I could apply for a license through the CLC but I'm sure that would be lots of $$$. However, if I can make and sell these shirts and they sell well I might look into getting a liscense and then I could use any college teams logo and make them for all teams. :D Yeah, yeah... big dreamer I know. :P

they don't have to sue you. I would think the threat of legal action from one of the AD's legal counsel is usually enough to get people to quit.

(did I spell counsel correctly?)

I think its a bit more specific than that. Methinks it's the interlocking OU that is copyrighted.

Sure, if you schmear "Huskers" over a red capital "N" you would probably get a nasty letter from the Husker Nation marketing dept., but methinks you can exercise fair use of the proper noun "Nebraska" or an "N" without invoking their wrath.

You know, you could always call the NU marketing folks and ask what is required to avoid trouble. Or a lawyer. I think they have a few in Lincoln.

Obviously you aren't in this to make money :D

I have a buddy who is kinda like wal mart on a small scale. He has a factory make all kinds of licenced clothes and whatnot in china and sells it on the innerwebs. My understanding is that he pays a fee to the NCAA and is allowed to design and make whatever. PM me if you want his info.

Really. Hmmm maybe I will get his info from you. I'm going to wait and hear back from the University first. Thanks! :)
