When I first saw i it took about 5 min for the page to load. I assumed it was only going to get worse. It has not so far.

Look at the "press confrence" thread as well.

The Longhorns’ helmets will feature a wildflower decal on the back, Mack Brown announced Monday.

The decal is a tribute to former first lady and UT graduate Lady Bird Johnson.

The wildflower is the brainchild of equipment manager Chip Robertson, Brown said.

Brown cited Mrs. Johnson’s work for wildflowers and the environment and her husband’s interest in Longhorn football and his work for civil rights as reasons that he thought it was a “great idea.”

Maybe you could... I don't know... name something after her... honor her before a game? Seems nice, I guess. We didn't put anything on OUr helmets after a terrorist bombed an OKC building and killed 168 people, did we? Not laughing, seriously asking. I only made one game in 95 and it was against Okie Light.

We already named something after her. Town Lake, which is formed from the Colorado River as it runs through downtown Austin, was renamed Lady Bird Lake by the city council.

But I think the tribute is fitting. We owe so much of the beauty of Town Lake, the hike and bike trail, Zilker Park, etc to her. Her husband's presidential library is on campus. She was a UT alum and a member of the board of regents. Even in the 70's there are stories of her eating lunch in the dorm cafeterias to get away and just visit with and listen to students, who probably didn't appreciate who they were talking with. She had requested, and got, the Longhorn band to close her funeral services with the Eyes of Texas. (a great video if you haven't seen it) The East side upper deck was built after she waved the height requirement that the State capitol be visible from the LBJ Library. In her last years she was the driving force behind the Lady Bird wildflower center in South Austin. Just a few of the things Austin and UT are in her debt for. She was the matriarch of possibly the most influential family Central Texas has known in the past century.

And finally, while she was alive she repeatedly refused efforts to rename Town Lake for her. I kind of have second thoughts about the council doing it after her death. But a small bluebonent, the State flower and most known wild flower, is very appropriate.

I could NOT agree more! Why does the freaking football team need to honor her? Did she play football? I mean, the university can honor her, they can hand out flowers to ladies in the stands entering the stadium, do a moment of silence in her behalf and all that...but why would you put flowers on the football team's helmets? How "Austin" of them!

Jim J. Bullock thinks this is kind of queer.

I predict nothing being done when George "kicks it". He doesn't like Austin and we don't particularly like him. No location in the State of Texas wants his presidential library. The best suggestion i've seen is to put it into a bookmobile type vehicle so it can keep moving and be out of town by sundown.

Actually, the flowers are a perfect fit for a tribute to her. Everyone knows about her drive to clean up Texas highways and plant wildflowers. But her main push with that program was bluebonnets.

She is the reason why thousands of people drive down our highways each spring, see those acres and acres of beautiful flowers, then stop, get out of their cars, and ruin them so little Becky can have her Easter picture taken.

Yes because the CITY of Austin is a mecca of political common sense. Gimme a break. I loved my years on The 40 Acres, but I'm glad I stayed with my people in West Campus. The university is more conservative than most think, but the idiots in Austin proper make the rest of the nation think the university must be that way too.

And to take it a step further, only PARTS on Austin have the extremists. North Austin and West Austin are both very conservative. Central, and East....not so much. South is hit or miss.

This other claim that somehow Texas is no longer Bush country......what, is it Hillary country now?

Gimme a break.
