Since some crybaby decided to close the official oilfield thread I thought I'd address this:

Biggest worry is gettin' the sat set up and keepin' fresh batteries in the remote. You boys got it rough all right.

I 'splained this to another hand who was giving me **** one time. We all made choices to get where we are. Some good, some bad. If you want to have my job make better choices.

Roughnecks have it tough no doubt but they work 7 on 7 off & at the end of tower they go home no matter what the situation. I've been on location 65 days straight without seeing my family. Have you? I've been up 50 hours without any sleep trying to trouble shoot a problem that was actually rig related. I've been on location 159 days this year--that's gone from home 70% of the time. You roughnecks work 50-50. I'm havin' 0 sympathy for you.

They won't fix anything until the pumps won't run. We had this problem right before you got assigned to us. We were down for a couple hours every day while they patched them up.

yep, 1TC, martin, SB68 operate those tools(MWD), and coincidentally, they all are tools

I dont know how far the actual tool for the directional info is behind the bit, but gamma can run 25-50' behind.

here's an LWD log. You can see that the borehole is going through the various formations perpindicular. If it's a vertical hole the dip of the formations is 0* from the curve on the far right. The left side of the far right curve and the right side are the same spot on the borehole, the highside. The middle is the low side.

yall arent running a flaygan monitor? that is just plain nuts these days to drill with out one

1stTimeCaller
8/26/2007, 08:35 PM
our directional sensor is 7-8' behind the gamma sensor, usually. One of our tools has the directional sensor closer to the bit than the gamma.

I'm about to start running one of our LWD tools and it's usually only 10-15 feet behind the bit.

These types of logs are sumwhat new to me. Meaning I've heard of them but have not had a chance to deal with them during the mornings.

I take it it saves time and money using these compared to running traditional logs?

1stTimeCaller
8/26/2007, 08:38 PM
That's not one of our logs. GIS lwd log and it's the first to come up. I have no idea what a flaygan monitor is, I think you made that word up.

The tool I'm going to run has an azimuthal gamma ray sensor, resistivity and density sensors.

SoonerBorn68
8/26/2007, 08:39 PM
I dont know how far the actual tool for the directional info is behind the bit, but gamma can run 25-50' behind.

Our survey point is normally around 48-56 ft. behind the bit & our gamma runs 8-12 ft below that.

1stTimeCaller
8/26/2007, 08:40 PM
also if you look at that LWD log you can see that there is no apparent dip as evidenced by the tadpole dots on the density curve. Post processing may indicate a dip but there is no apparent dip on that log.

Petro-Sooner
8/26/2007, 08:41 PM
And what is that on the far right? A BHI while MWD??

Cause that would be pretty cool. Totally fresh sample/image.

And what is that on the far right? A BHI while MWD??

It's not a BHI log but the far right curve is a resistivity curve. Highside is on the far left and far right, low side is in the middle.

it may be a BHI LWD log.

The very far right curve, the colored curve that doesn't look like any of the others. If you cut it out and folded it to where the left side touched the right side and the paper formed a cylinder, that's what the borehole looks like.

If you look at the top you will see that it's laid out like this N E S W N. The Norths being the highside and South being the lowside.

they have to be sent in to the office for post processing when you are done drilling. The actual dip of the formation is hard to see when drilling, especially if you are in the curve. If you are at 45* INC and the dip appears to be 5* it's really 40 or 50 degrees. It's 5* different from the borehole but the hole is at 45*. If that makes sense.

It takes about 18 hours to do the post processing.

A few colorful if not suggestive words from the oilfield vocabulary:

Blowout - Uncontrolled flow of gas, oil, or other fluids from a well during drilling due to excessive formation pressure.

Buddy System - Two team members working together to complete a task safely and efficiently. Always know where your buddy is.

Head Gas - Gas dissolved in crude oil which emerges at the casing head when pressure is lowered.

Crooked Hole - When the wellbore (hole) has deviated from the vertical inadvertently.

Dog Leg - A sharp change in direction in a hole.

Dope - A form of thread grease used to lubricate the threads before 2 joints are connected together.

Drilling Fluids - A pre-determined mixture of mud used to carry cuttings to the top. These can also be air, natural gas, oil and water.

Dry Hole - A hole that did not produce.

Dual Completion - The completion of a well in which two separate formations may be produced at the same time.

Going in the Hole - Lowering drill pipe into the hole.

Hole - Common term for wellbore.

Junk - Debris lost in the hole.

Latch On - To clamp the elevators onto the pipe.

Laying Down the Pipe - Pulling and disassembling the pipe string out of the hole and laying it down onto the pipe racks.

Making Hole > Turning to the Right - Simply put "Drilling"

Open Hole - Uncased part of a well.

Penetration - Rate at which the drill bit proceeds in the deepening of the hole. "Feet per hour."

Rotating Bottom - Making a hole.

Side Tracking - Drilling past an obstruction in the hole.

Slim Hole Drilling-Drilling in which the hole size is smaller than the conventional hole diameter, enabling the driller to run smaller casing.

Slug - Heavy Mud.

Specific Gravity - Ratio of weight of any substance to weight of equal volume of another substance.

Spudding In - Commencement of actual drilling of a well.

Stuck Pipe - Drill pipe, casing, or tubing that can't be worked in or out of the hole as desired.

Swabbing - Operation of using a swab to bring well fluids to the surface when the well does not flow naturally.

Tight Hole - Drilling a well in which the information obtained is restricted and passed only to those authorized to receive it.

Twist - To quit without notice.

Twist Off - To fracture a joint of drill pipe in two causing a recovery or fishing operation.

very few people, to almost none, drink on locations that I have been on. A company man I worked with was an oxy/herion addict. He'd put stuff over the windows to block out the light, and he was rarely available to talk to cause he was in the "living" area of his trailer with the office part blocked off. He'd have the nod. So doped up, he could barely keep his eyes open and uncontrollably bobbing his head. He was ran off.

Guns, meh. The people that have them are the people that stay out on location. You arent supposed to have them, but everyone does.

I know a guy that always has a few beers in his fridge. He has a rifle and a shotgun in the trailer too but he needs to get them out of there and just keeps forgetting to take them out.

yeah, on some of them you can, depends on the owner/operator

just make sure to bring plenty of line, because it can be 50+ feet from cellar deck to the ocean

Unlike most, this thread IS worthless WITH pics!

Remember the thread with pics from the camera by the waterhole in africa. Now THAT was an awesome thread.

And hats off to the oilfield guys. Keep it up.

No prob. If I worked out there my pole would come with 225hp and be wrapped in 22ft of fiberglass.

changing out a pump. This is going to be a fiasco. It's a different style of pump and they think they can have it up and running in an hour.

I'm going to take a nap.

Sorry, martin.
