One of my many classes this semester is Cinematic Theology.

It is a class where we discuss possible theologies (hidden, obvious, or under the surface) in movies.

Basically our project is to choose a movie and present it in front of the class and discuss the theology of the movie. The class is, what we call, a block class. Which means the class meets once a week and is about 2 and a half hours long.

Next week we are watching Bruce Almighty.

We will also be watching Signs some time this semester.
Sounds like this will be a fun class.

I'm thinking about my movie that I'm going to present.
I may choose Castaway. But I'm not sure yet.

What would you suggest. (No pron, of course)

Discuss...

Groundhog Day (no joke)
Jonah Goldberg wrote a pretty decent paper on the subject once for National Review.

I once watched Groundhog Day for a Philosophy class project.

I wonder if Boondock Saints would work.

On the Waterfront is an oldy but goodie and lots of religious symbolism....the more modern one is definately the matrix...it is the story of John the Baptist

Someone else has already claimed the Matrix. Groundhog Day is one of the films we briefly discussed today in class.

as much as I like O' Brother, there is too much bad language in the film.

To at least use for my class.

O Brother Where Art Thou is The Odyssey. Straight up.

the Matrix is way too easy. It's not even a religious subtext, they club you to death with it by the third movie.

ET is easy. He came down from the heavens. Performed miracles. Gained disciples. Was persecuted. Died. Was resurrected and went back to the heavens.

One of my most favorite movies is Resurrection, from the early 80s, with Ellyn Burstyn and Sam Shephard. She is in a terrible car wreck that kills her husband and paralyzes her but develops the power to heal. She doesn't know or care where the power comes from, but uses it to help people. Sam Shephard plays her boyfriend, part of the Bible Belt Kansas community she's come back to; he, like many others believe her power comes from God. The writing and acting are superb in this movie.

The Chronicles of Narnia. The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe

Obviously very easy as CS Lewis wrote the book and it is intentionally an allegory of Christian doctrine.

But that's the point. It would be an easy assignment then. :)

This right here is why I don't like CS Lewis. Well, one of the reasons...

Christianity itself is an allegory.

With a better roll of the dice, that could have not been just a good film, but a great one.

Resurrection would be good.

The Lord of the Rings (3 movies, but the religious overtone is everywhere)
