Bob Fenimore

Robert Dale Fenimore (born October 6, 1925 in Woodward, Okla.), known as the "Blond Bomber" was a halfback for the Oklahoma A&M football team from 1943-1946. He was the first two-time All America selection from Oklahoma A&M and finished third in the Heisman voting in 1945. As a player, he set many school records, including the career interception mark of 18 which still stands at Oklahoma State today. He led the nation in total offense in 1944 and in total offense and rushing in 1945 when he finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting behind Army's Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard. The OAMC Aggies were 8-1 in 1944 and 9-0 in 1945--the only unbeaten/untied season in Oklahoma A&M/State football history.

Due to injuries, Fenimore played sparingly in the 1946 season and despite the risk, the Chicago Bears made Fenimore the first pick overall in the 1947 NFL draft. He would play only the 1947 season in Chicago appearing in 10 games.

In 2002 Fenimore was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Yup. I'm pretty sure Goldberg, at least as a football player, wasn't nearly as good as Tillman.

When I transferred to Metro, I guess I'd say the best player was Jerry Crafts - he played for several years on Buffalo's OL. The only other person I can think of who played major college ball was Erik Watts (son of Cowboy Bill Watts) who played QB for Louisville back in the late 80's, early 90's.

My school, abilene high, hasnt had a lot of sucessful athletes. I would say probably Jonathan Johnson, who is currently trying to make the olympics in the 800. Maybe Taylor Potts, who is a rs freshman qb at tech. Time will tell on him.

Our crosstown rival, Cooper, has had a few. Dominic Rhodes( rb for the colts last year, now with the raiders) is from there. Also some dude name Jack Mildren played there. I think he was ok;)

Danny Copeland > Won a Super Bowl ring at the Starting FS for Washington.

Myron Guyton > Won a Super Bowl with NY Giants as starting strong safety.

Jesse Small > Played for the Philadelphia Eagles, took the cheap shot on the Dallas kicker years ago.

Joe Burns > Plays for Buffalo Bills.

Paul Miranda > Played for Ind. and Seattle.

Crosstown rival Thomasville High

Guy McIntyre > Won Super Bowls with San Francisco.

William Andrews > Played for Atlanta Falcons.

Shawn Jones > QB for National Champion Georgia Tech in '90 (??), lived across the street from Charlie Ward.

Emel was famous at JM for being the last man standing, literally, during a bench-clearing, stand-clearing brawl between the Bears and the Douglass Trojans. I know the film of it was shown by the NW Classen coach to his team before they played the Trojans in 1970. Emel can be seen towards the end of the film, standing amongst the writhing bodies, his helmet in hand. He was also our star basketball player.

Go 20 miles up the road to Lovington and BRIAN URLACHER was the best player every from my high school.

I also attended schools in Crane, Tx and Pampa, Tx. From Crane, former Sooner Eddie Foster grew up in Crane, but got the "oil field transfer" to Monahans. Crane also had Steve "Moose" Pendalton get an OU scholarship, but he washed out and quit football after his freshman season. Finally, Nebraksa's Kenny Walker was an AA DE who played in the pros with Denver. Kenny was deaf and a great story. All of that said, the absolute best athlete was Tommy Jones, 6'0", 185 lbs, now of Brownfield, Texas, TJ lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He was recruited to play college hoops for John Wooden but did not have the grades to go to UCLA. He averaged 42 ppg and took Crane to the Texas High School state championship where they lost by six.

Pampa had a few kids get D-1 scholarships, but the best athlete was Randy Matson who was an Olympic gold medalist in the shot put. Randy went to TAMU.

Midland High Chemics in Midland, Michigan. (How about that knickname).Toss up. Either Howard Mudd or Tom Drake. Mudd was from the first state championship team. He played offensive line at Hillsdale College which is Div 3 and lots of seasons in the NFL with the 49ers. He is still coaching today in the NFL

Or Tom Drake from the 2nd and 3rd state championship teams. Tom played safety his junior year and in his senior year was the only player who played both ways when they put him at halflback. Intercepted 5 passes against Flint Northern in 1969 and ran back 2 punt returns that night for touchdowns. Bo Schembechler, the new Michigan head coach was at the game and offered him a scholarship. Drake started for Michigan at cornerback 3 seasons, held for extra points and field goals, and was the near-deep punt returner blocking for All American David Brown. These Michigan teams lost one game and tied one game in 3 seasons but never went to a bowl. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1975 but cut due to injury. In track, Drake finished in 3rd place in the 100 yard dash with a 9.6! Herb Washington of Flint Central and the US Olympic team finished in 9.1. Drake ran the 220 in about 22.2 or so.

A third guy was a 2 year QB named Terry Collins. Terry was really a baseball player and led Midland to the Nationals in Connie Mack and American Legion. Played several years for the California Angels system and has managed Major League baseball teams for several years.

Very definitely, Steve Owens for Miami High.

Fairly close second in my book was Steve's little brother Tinker. Like Steve, Tinker won the state championship in the 110 hurdles, and was all-state in football (he and Steve Largent were the WRs for Oklahoma Oil Bowl game against the Texas all-staters. Not too bad, huh?). Tinker also ended up as an All-American at OU while averaging two catches a game. Was on his way to greatness with the New Orleans Saints before a detached retina ended his career.

Best offensive player was Lynn Scott. He was a rushing machine. He was our entire offense for a long time (I was his fullback for several years :)). Ended up playing 4-5 years I think for the Cowboys at Safety. Backed up TGRW and excelled at Special teams.

Best Defensive player was Mike Dulaney. Ask Gumbo Fazande about him. He was the guy who broke Gumbo's jaw before transferring to Tulsa.

Jerry was huge. And a mean streak just as wide. Funny how out of all those Olinemen in that time frame, including guys like AP, Jon Phillips, Mark Hutson, and Greg Johnson that only Crafts was the one who made it big in the NFL. Of course, he had to transfer to Louisville for (cough, cough) personal reasons.

Freddie Hurd (Class of '76) was a terrific running back who tore up all the record books while playing at Ardmore. Unfortunately, he had neither the size or academic skills to succeed in college.

18 years later, Ardmore won something like 7 state championships. Just sayin'...

True, Freddie Hurd story. Back in the day there was no limit on how many kids you could sign out of high school and OU would sign 100 kids just to keep OSU or anyone else from getting them. Freddie signed with OU but was about as bright as a dark hole in space. Because his grades were so poor he couldn't get into OU so they were going to send him to NEO to play get his grades up and then play his last two years at OU. Well, they told Freddie he would be playing ball in Miami and he got all excited because he thought they were sending him to Florida.

Not laying any "hero" stories here, but I flat out planted Meech Shaw with a relatively cheap shot in our season opener against Ponca in 1985. He was a sophomore then. Everytime I saw his mug I'd tell people that I planted him once....but I never told them it was on a cheap shot. :)

Funny you should mention that, clearly remember Dana Brinson (NEB Punt Returner) taking 100% of Todd's wrestling skills on a return in 1987. I think it's on YouTube, but Todd hit him so hard I think he violated him.

I ran into Todd last weekend at an event in OKC, thankfully I fared much better than Dana Brinson did. He's doing his state politics thing (remember he won in the closest election in history) and still doing much with the FCA. Class act.

Ditto on the latter, but not the former. Did it hit the crossbar? I think so...but maybe I'm thinking of Bill McClard's 60-yarder at Arkansas.

I saw DiRienzo kick in High School. It was something back in the early '70s to see a high school kid booming these soccer-style kicks into the end zone, when most straight forward style kickers were lucky to get it to the ten-yard line.

I can also add I have a nephew who sacked Troy Aikman in a game and a son who sacked David Carr (but in practice, since they were on the same high school team). Does that count?

Muskogee. Glen "Mr." Bell. His teammates Terron Manning, Marcus McVay and Harold Aldridge were not so bad, either. Leaving BTW after upsetting them in the 1985 state semi's was SCARY! Beating them next year for the state title was awesome! Bell outdueled Notre Dame bound Tony Brooks that night.
I gues it is a factor of age that a Muskogee grad didn't mention Bob, Kurt and Buddy Burris or Max Boydston. Also, in 1966, the Tulsa World named its offensive and defensive players of the year in Oklahoma. (Steve Owens on offense, John Ward of Tulsa Rogers on defense.) For the first time ever they named a Player of the Year. Mike Hendren of Muskogee. He got more votes than Ward or Owens but at 7 different positions. Accomplished that on a team that went 1-9-1. Played at Arkansas. Set a SW Conference rushing record for freshmen, was a stud running back as a Soph, then screwed up his neck. Now a family physician in Russelville, Arkansas.

When I was in Jr. High and living in Hobbs, NM Timmy Smith played running at Hobbs High. He was the best high school running back I've ever seen.

edit: For those of you that don't know Timmy Smith holds the record for the most rushing yards in a Super Bowl.

http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/categorystats?tabSeq=0&statisticCategory=RUSHING

Can't argue with Timmy Smith, but some older guys from HHS that are noteworthy: Bill Bridges was one of the early graduates from the Tasker basketball factory and played with the LA Lakers in the early 70's. Bill was like a 6th man and got alot of meaningful minutes. I believe he was on the '71 Laker team that holds the record for most consecutive victories. Also, Larry White was an AA center at UNM. Larry's son, Tiger, was also an all-state LB. I also would be remiss to leave off the list my good friend Clay Daniels from Heizer JH and HHS. Clay was also an all-state LB, but ran the 400 in the SWC. Finally, there is also the Taylor Bros who were B-ball phenoms.

If you want to expand to other Lea County locales (or Hobbs suburbs), then Kathy Whitworth (born in Monahans) is from Jal HS and a LPGA HOF memeber.

I went to a playoff game in Norman against Carl Albert when Runnels was at CA, I think Wilson and Hump might have been on that BTW team if I recall correctly. One of our high school's rivals. The list includes Magic Johnson but the greatest was Jim Abbott of Flint Southwestern High School.

Jim Abbott was born with one hand (half an arm) missing. He was a 3 sport, 3 year starter at Flint Southwestern in football, basketball, and baseball.
He quarterbacked his team to the Michigan large school finals. Played baseball and I thought football at University of Michigan. Drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Pitched 10 years in the major leagues. Now a pitching coach for the Angels and a motivational speaker for the disabled.

For more check out his web site!! http://www.jimabbott.info/biography.html

I also attended schools in Crane, Tx and Pampa, Tx. From Crane, former Sooner Eddie Foster grew up in Crane, but got the "oil field transfer" to Monahans.
My wife graduated from Monahans.

Jerry was a lot of fun to be around, I never saw him get in any trouble but I heard stories
After the Bills he had a stint in the XFL in LA with Tommy Maddox then he played for the Packers and Eagles.

The only one that I can think of for PC West is Scott Tinsley who went to SUC and was a QB for the Eagles during the "replacement" games during the NFL strike.

He was a funny guy too, I did leave that out. It was nice watching him get his big self in and out of the old army ambulance he drove while at OU. :)

Hey, no fair. I went to Roswell Goddard,

It's cool to hear about my neck of the woods, because nobody comes from my neck of the woods... well, there really ain't no woods there either.

Yeah, you can look farther and see less than anywhere in the US. A buddy of mine had a Kawasaki 900 when it was the fastest production bike. He and his dad would ride up to Ruidosa on weekends. On the way back, the would open 'em up between Roswell and Tatum to about 120 mph in the middle of the night. That's got to be one of the longest and flatest stretches of road in the US.

LHS sucked when I was there, but came on strong afterwards and won a few state championships.

Hrm....

At my Chickasha High School in Oklahoma it would be Stephen Alexander. Some of you may have heard of him.

At my high school in Longview Texas I'm crossing my fingers and hoping its going to be Malcolm Kelly after this year.

Charles C. Mason High School, Tulsa, Oklahoma

The school closed in 1979 and merged into Memorial High School and Hale High School. Hale High School won the state 4A title the next year with the influx of the old Mason coaching staff of Don Eddy and Jack Kiper along with Mason's last junior class that included a good linebacker named Kelly Goode.

The best Mason High school player was Bob Slater. He played defensive tackle for OU and was on the team from 1980 to 1984. The Redskins took him with their top pick in the NFL draft, it was a 2nd rounder, but he blew a knee out.

Jim Northcutt played at Mason with Slater and went to Kansas State. He was part of that famous senior class that red-shirted and helped rebuild the K-State program.

Tex Cobb was in Liar Liar? He wasn't that great of a boxer either. Scary lookin' dude though!

He wasn't all that bad. Hell of a puncher and could take a punch (or a beating a'la Larry Holmes).

52 fights, 43 wins (36 by KO),7 losses and one draw.

Most of the athletes in my hometown went to a different school, although now that I think about it, Dave Robisch went to Springfield High and played basketball for Kansas back in the late 60's, then went on to play with the Celtics for a while. Old school baseball fans might remember Phillies HOF pitcher Robin Roberts, and current NBA fans would know Sixers F Andre Iguodala, who both went to Springfield Lanphier.

I graduated Booker T. in 97 with Ryan Hump, Aaron Lockett and monster tackle Rocky Bright who suffered a freak accident at OU to end his career. Tisdale, Eton Thomas, RW McQuarters, Robert Meachum, Felix Jones, Kevin Lockett...but my pick for best all time is DeMond Parker. Had he avoided injuries and stayed to play his senior season for coach Stoops I think he'd still be one of the premier backs in the NFL.

I'll never forget the game when he tore his jersey before the game and had to wear my friends jersey (sophmore backup tight end Chris Snow). He had like 300+ yards and the announcer called out "Chris Snow" about 100 times. They didn't even get it straight in the paper, the Tulsa World article said something to the effect of "If there was Snow on the field, he wasn't slipping". We never heard the end of it...

Any of you Owasso people remember an Aaron Goins? Played around the mid-90'2 I think. He also played for OU for awhile.

Just curious what you remember about him as an athlete.

Just saw the Oklahoman list. They have Odell lawson as Ponca city's best. WTF?Yeah he was all-stae and All-American (at Langston). As far as that goes Waddy Young and Tom Catlin were all-state and All-American( but at OU).As far as running backs go,he couldn't have done much career-wise at Ponca. The career mark for rushing was @2200 yards before first being broken by Micah Johnson(2400 yards) and then shattered by Josh Johnson(4000 yards )in the last few years.
If NFL experience was the determining factor both Young and Catlin also played in the NFL.I just don't get it.

9 pages and nary a Trojan to be found...good grief.

Rocky Calmus.

Jenks has contended or won the state title for 15 years running or so, yet they seem to send precious few players to OU much less to the NFL. Maybe Coach Trimble had them all on the wrong diet...

I remember the name. I think he used to be my baby sitter when I was like 8 or 9 (he graduated in 89). I dont remember much about him as an athlete though...

Edit: apparently he joined the sooners after leaving pro baseball (drafted 2nd round by the reds) as a tailback under Gary Gibbs in 1990.

Billy Bajema?I would rank him right there with Jeff Frazier. Depending on your age, you probably don't even know who Jeff Frazier is.
