View Full Version : Does the Sooners have plays that the fan base recognizes from just a few words?

I am curious if there are historic type plays that the Sooner fanbase cherishes and remembers from simple phrases. It is something that Bama fans have done over the years (thanks mainly to paintings done of the plays).

We have plays such as The Kick (Van Tiffen against Auburn), The Sack (Bennett's sack of Beurline of Notre Dame), The Play (Teagues stripping of the ball against Miami), Rocky Stop (2005 hit and fumble against Tennessee)and many more.

Are there plays by OU that stick out in your mind that you would describe as THE kick or THE hit, or are they all so good you cant categorize them? ;)

The main one I can think of would be 'The Shuffle Pass(es)'. :( hehe

Well, our version of "The Kick" is von Schamann to beat Ohio St. in 1977, while "The Hit" would be Scott Case decking Tony Dorsett in 1976. There's also Roy Williams' nailing Chrissy Simms in 2001 with the Doomsday Device, often called the Superman play. Keith Jackson's tight-end reverse in 1986 against Nebraska also comes to mind.

Scott Hill, not Scott Case. IIRC. Case played in the 80's.

the run - Renaldo Works vs. Bama
the fumble - Tyler Watts fumbles and Eric Bassey returns it for a TD vs. Bama
the fake - Ferguson's pass to Thompson vs. Bama

;)

edit: I guess technically "the run" was a pass.

We had a discussion similar to this a long while ago.

I know both 'Bama and OU also have "the streak" in their vernaculars. Ours concerns the 47 in a row. If I recall correctly, Alabama's refers to the 27 national championships in a row back in the mid 1900s.

The Kick against Ohio State

The Return by Little Joe. He went about 90 yards just to lose about 5 yards.

"The Wink"-Josh Heupel hitting Curtis Fagan for the tying TD against Nebraska in 2000 and clearly winking to the crowd as he walked off the field.

"Superman"-Already mentioned. Roy Williams forcing Chris Simms into an interception by Teddy Lehman by jumping over a cutting Brett Robin and nailing Simms on the throwing arm.

The Superman Play is also called The Leap. That's one of the best plays in College Football history.

Keith Jackson also had "The Catch" against Nebraska in 87. A one handed catch that led to a game winning FG.

"The Butt-Pucker" is either the Renaldo Works run against 'Bama or Torrance Marshall's INT return against The Cult. :D

Well, that was the name of the blitz, but I've never heard anyone actually refer to the play as that.

"The Shart" is my personal reference to the :stunned: Oregon fans in the Holiday Bowl 2005. Don't know who they were playing, though... sicnce we weren't there or anything.

"The Dribble" which was the sound of Cale Gundy's head bouncing off the concrete we called a field back in 93 against Colorado.

plus, for whatever reason we played them twice in a row in Lincoln. 86 and 87?

but Octavian is right, it was fall of 85, the TE reverse. 86 we score the last 13 points of the game to win up there*. 87 is the Stafford run and after running their mouths NU goes 2 quarters without a first down or whatever it is.

*my Dad used to go pheasant hunting in NE with some buddies and they split away tickets with some NU guys every year they'd up there or out in western OK (quail). great he story he tells about that game (short version)....where my dad and the OU guys are happy a pig in slop to go for two to win...."gotta go for two at 17-16". and Nebraska guy says: "nah, Switzer will kick the PAT because he knows he'll get the ball back and probably win".

As far as I'm concerned

THE LEAP should refer to Spencer Tillman against Nebraska in '83

THE HIT should refer to Reggie Barnes against Nebraska in '90

THE FUMBLE is Sims in '78

THE PASS is Jamelle to Jackson on 1/1/86 or Blevins against Nebraska.

THE CATCH is K Jackson '86.

THE MISSED CALL is Stanberry INT in '84 or the obvious fumble a few plays before.

THE MOST PAINFUL LOSS is the '81 game against USC.

I still think Hill's hit should be THE HIT. That was Tony f'n Dorsett. He's an okay player.

Barne's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn44lp1BGuo) play is okay though.

I still remember a couple of great plays, when I was there: In 1975, when Pittsburg came to play - Dorsett had gained over 100 yards in every game, up to that game - We got there early to heckle he the rest of the team as they worked out. The HIT was made by Scotty Hill - knocking Tony goofy and out of the game!

The "kick" was as memorable - the entire OSU horseshoe chanting "Block that kick'" with Ewe leading them, like a conductor leading his orchestra.

MiccoMacey
8/20/2007, 12:44 PM
No, I think that was in '81 or '83. I remember thinking at the time how fortunate we were.

I'm thinking '83 mainly because I think that was the year Dupree left in the middle of the season.

I remember that. The Pride wore halloween costumes for a half-time performance and one member wore a Dupree jersey and carried suitcases.

I also remember the hook and lateral in Lincoln.

This was due to how the Big 8 scheduled conference games. They scheduled them in 10 year blocks- '86 was the end of one block, with '87 being the beginning of the new one.

I seem to remember it also had something to do with a wrinkle caused by Ok a&m joining the conf. Never quite understood it, but I remember hearing it..

Come to think of it, there are lots of things I remember hearing but not understanding...

87 is the Stafford run...

Patrick Collins...and one of the greatest Sooner moments I've ever witnessed. I was sitting in the OU endzone section at Lincoln Memorial, and you're right...the Husker fans were running their mouths from well before game time until right about the time Collins hit their 20 yd. line on what was a 64 yd. TD streak down the sidelines. Something about "Our House" and these stupid cut-out key signs, based on Broderick Thomas running his mouth during game week.

The Collins Run came at a critical juncture in the game, a 7-7 tie, but momentum having clearly swung toward the Huskers midway through the 3rd quarter. And watching Option Right unfold from the endzone, with the Sooners headed the other way, was a thing of beauty. With OU facing a third and six and desperately needing a first down to sustain the drive, I turned to my sister and said, "If we don't get a first down here, we're in trouble". She proceeded to bury her face in her hands. As the play unfolded and Charles Thompson turned left, a hole opened in the line of scrimmage that was so wide that I stood up and yelled, "PITCH IT!" When Thompson let go of the ball, I threw my hands in the air. Collins was gone.

I've never heard a stadium get that quiet, that fast.
