So this morning I get up and check the track predictions for the big blow and find that it's heading directly for the Texas coast where we just built a house. Great. We've already measured and cut the plywood, bought a generator, water and enough gasoline to immolate Ketch. Oldest son is returning to college in a week so he and I were going down tomorrow for a week of taking the boat offshore and banging some big tuna. Now it looks like we will be pulling out the window boards and moving the generator and gas up to the deck. The ****er is that the boat holds 200 gals. and that is our reserve for anything but a direct hit. Now we'll have to take it up river.

Whining complete. I'll keep you apprised if you're interested as we just got satellite internet installed down there.

If you are interested in the location go to:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=s&utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-google-gm&utm_medium=ha&utm_term=google%20maps

and find Matagorda. There is a spit of land where the Colorado river flows into the gulf of Mex. We're on that spit between E. & W. Matagorda Bays.

Hurricane Categories
Category 1
Winds of 64-82 knots (74-95 mph)
Storm surge 4 to 5 feet above normal

Category 2
Winds of 83-95 knots (96-110 mph)

Storm surge 9 to 12 feet above normal

Category 4
Winds of 114 to 135 knots (131-155 mph)

Category 5

Storm surge more than 18 feet above normal

Katrina was a 4 when she crossed lower Placquemines Parish (the mouth of the Mississippi) and a category 3 when she crossed the Mississippi Gulf Coast and my old house.

Dean is still headed to WARMER water and less shear, so it will be a 5, depending on eyewall replacement cycles and such.

slickdawg
8/17/2007, 09:48 PM
PS. The storm surge is also a function of the continental shelf. Katrina produced a 29 foot surge in Mississippi with the shallow shelf, that is why the flooding was so severe.

I'd say it's time to pick up the trash out of the yard,
(1TC are you paying attention? You should do this even though you wont be getting Cat3 winds where you are.)

Beat the rush and start this weekend. Buy some supplies, secure the windows, gas up everything you can, and perhaps leave early for that trip to New Mexico that you've been putting off for years.

I'd imagine that by Wednesday traffic will become uncomfortable.
Monday seems like a good day to take some vacation time. You need the rest and relaxation anyway.
