My Blonde Daughter: Sorority Rush Mistress

She called this weekend. She's never had any real responsibility for rush except to show up and be polite and stuff...and perhaps make snarky comments about individual rush-ers after events. This year, as a senior, she's on the rush committee and makes calls on who gets invited to things.

She called lamenting the fact she's taken a bazillion calls from various quarters trying to influence outcomes on who gets a bid. Typically its from somebody's Aunt Susan in Mobile who, as alumna, wants to know WTF her niece, we'll call her Megan, has been cut from the running.

To which, my Blonde Daughter replies, "Well ma'am, Megan was super sweet and we all think she's just adorable, but she has a 17 ACT and National just won't let us accept that." Whereupon, my kid gets yammered at for about five minutes.

I suspect it's really because Megan has a huge buttocks and eats like a hiefer, but I digress.

Anyhoo, I reckon this sort of stuff is good life practice. Especially since heretofore, she grew up in a modern world where every kid gets a trophy and "all are winners."

Nope...just me thus far amongst my siblings...although Mom is 4.5 years older than Dad...her mom was 6.5 years older than my late grandfather, and my paternal grandmother is 1.5 years older than my late paternal grandfather.

I'm not in a frat but I disagree. I do live with the President of a frat, but I've never had a problem with them.

And you don't really pay money for friends. It's like any other organization that depends on membership dues in order to hold functions and support organizational activities. Where would the money come from to do things if not from membership dues? You could say the same thing about ANY group.

Also, not every school allows houses. ;)

You pay money to fund your activities with your friends. Bulk purchasing goes a long way in social activities. The whole buying friends is a misconception put forth by people who are too lame to make enough friends to get in.

...said the person who has formed opinions based on distant observation. Joining a fraternity was one of the best decisions I made in college. I actually got my first job out of college via a contact made from my fraternity. I'll grant you the "immature people" thing but I would argue that most of the students there were immature.

You just wish you would have been smart enough to join one. Girls like that basically volunteer to come over and party with you at your house. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

And you are going to be living with a bunch of immature people anyway in the dorms or in the apts after the dorms.

The money that you pay is almost directly equivalent to how much it costs to live in the dorms for one year. So basically you are saying that you missed out on a free party because nobody likes you. My house would have shown you the volleyball court.

Joining a fraternity was one of the best decisions I made in college.

I agree. I had mixed feelings at first but I love it now.


I'll grant you the "immature people" thing but I would argue that most of the students there were immature.
