straight off the pga website:

Former Oklahoma State Cowboy and Edmond resident Scott Verplank shot himself to the top of the leaderboard at the 89th PGA Championship with a stellar, bogey-free 66 at Southern Hills. Can anyone from the late groups catch the steady Sooner?

i'm sure he doesn't like being called a SOONER. and no SOONER could EVAR be confused with a cowboy. blech!!!

Sooner is a common nickname for anybody from Oklahoma, just like Hoosiers and Indiana.
