OU's Anthony Kim on the green....I never saw him make **** but the approaches were nice. And, he has an entourage.

Ernie Els off of 18 (I think) tee

Ernie Els and whoever he was playing with...I think this is the 18th fairway

Every hole is narrow off the tee
http://img487.imageshack.us/img487/1356/offtheteewr9.jpg

There aren't a lot of houses on the course, but there was this one with a waterfall and The Doors playing. I wouldn't be surprised if it was being rented by one of the players.
http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/9122/shhomemh4.jpg

Number 6 tee....we spoke to Aaron Oberholser's caddy who was out checking out yardage here. They use these instead of the blue stripe on the cart parth or the blue marker in the fairway for some reason. :D
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/8497/yardagemarkeroa8.jpg

And finally.....the tiniest green I've ever seen. For a few minutes I was trying to figure out if it was a practice green out in the middle of the course or what, but it's not.....it's the 13th green which is a par 5. Fronted by two ponds.

there's kind of an interesting video at yahoo sports with Dave Pelz (with requisite USGA bashing) talking about how the PGA will monitor green speed by the conditions on the 9th and 18th green due to the slope.

get ready for that to be the "back story" that gets ridden into the ground on both coverages.

the slope of the greens are severe but the stimps of today's championship greens is hardly something Perry Maxwell could have anticipated anymore than the growth of trees hinder original sight and lines of play--.

We were out there yesterday, WARM.

Saw just about everybody that was there practicing. Tiger cam out to the range and then bailed....and Phil was a no show.

that course is just ridiculous right now...it's fast, really fast. They are going to have to control distances off the tee too, cause that rough is NASTY. The way it was cut, it just goes straight to the bottom.

this is going to be fun to watch.

nice pics pat.

I like this quote from him (Pelz):

"..you say that isn't fair - it is fair, just don't hit the ball over the green..."

I think it's a good idea to cut all of the other greens the same as 9 & 18 so they are consistent.

I use the "craw" and hardly ever have more than 28-30 putts!

Of course, that could speak to the fact that I am constantly chipping onto the green due to not making green in reg.!

I wish I was there- If I had made it, that would have been 6 majors that I had attended in the last 7 years.

i can think of at least a dozen players i'd pull for over Daly. a guy who walks off the golf course, or half-asses his way to big numbers because he isn't trying.....meh. i don't see that as good for golf, JMO. especially when i see junior players today who don't rake bunkers and don't repair ballmarks and park their bags on the green, etc.

i don't think his success is bad for the game, i just don't see why it's better than other players.

i understand the "everyman" hillbilly populist thing up against a bunch of country club never had a job types....but, i'm just not a huge Daly fan. i don't pull against him and everyone (including yer old buddy King Curmudgeon) loves an older guy who's been scuffling for a while and re-captures the old glory at a major by playing into contention. so, if he plays well, i'm all for it.

I didn't mean to imply that his playing well was better for golf than anyone else, just good for the game in the 'everyman' sense of it like you stated.

He makes some big numbers, but I REALLY don't think it's cause he isn't trying....honestly. Cabrera made a nice big number yesterday, not because he wasn't trying, just some bad decisions....I think the same applies to Daly.

i understand that what you meant was the populist angle.

but, he's done a lot of stuff (not so much recently) but in the late 90's where he putts his ball while it's still moving, doesn't read putts, etc. out of frustration. he's checked it in and doesn't care if he makes 7 or 9.

I tend to agree with you. I used to be a big Daly fan but after reading his book, and looking at how he acts on and off the golf course throughout his career, I have become less and less a fan of his.

All that yesterday showed me is that if he really loved golf, and had half of the determination that Tiger has, he'd be ranked in the top five year after year with all of the talent that he possesses.

Daly has all of the talent in the world, but he has doesn't have the work ethic or determination of a top tiered player. On top of that, he has a brain the size of a pea, and he would much rather lose money at the casino's, than he would working on his golf game. John is his own worst enemy and I hope that he never remarries!

It's a shame really but I still hope he has a good showing despite his self.

we went Tuesday and yesterday. Will be there on Sunday too!
You can park at the Methodist church on Lewis and walk across the road to get in. it's $20, but better than taking the shuttle.

yesterday we hit our usual spots on the front to see the guys then migrated to the bleachers behind 13 and 16. then we camped in the shade behind there and watched the guys tee off on 14 and 17 (10 yards apart) the rest of the afternoon.
Paddy Harrington cut under the ropes to get some shade next to me yesterday.

also, if you've read the latest Golf Digest, theres a great article in there about Stuart Appleby. he commented that he cracks up when US fans yell they're rooting for him since the term rooting in Aussie land means screwing.
naturally I yelled that tom him on Tuesday.:D

oh yeah, we stood behind Tiger on 16 and watched him push slice one ugly assed drive. right after he had gone to -3. he was waiting on the group ahead and then was cut off when the goober marshalls let the gallery through the fairway. he was clearly going to hit farther than the norm on that hole.

the low angle camera work gives a decent idea of the contour at SH. and it looks great. the big bunkers that fit into the natural slope of the land (the Maxwell minimalist, organic trademark)....but the snoopy two shots expose the symmetry of the bunkering that you don't really see on the ground. it's looks cookie cutter, when it's far from that. "on the ground".

and REALLY goes to show my standing point (in reverse) in most of the Open Championship threads that most of the Tour courses are made to be photographed from the air. or, at minimum, with that in mind especially the usually needless leopard spot, camo on steroids, sea shell bunkering is all made to be seen from Snoopy II.

The Tiger vs Jack debate will rage on for years. Regardless, both have given golf a much needed boost in there respected eras.

Personally, regardless of what I think of Tiger, he is the greatest golfer I've ever seen and he stands a great chance to eclipse most if not all of jack's records.

What really impresses me about Tiger is that he seems to be a decent human being, stays out of trouble and really protects and cares for his family. Especially with the intense scrutiny that he's under everyday of his life! The guy has never been linked to anything remotely negative unless you count being an ******* as such.

Jack really never had that type of scrutiny in his career.

i somewhat disagree. tiger is not a favorite of USGA rules officials. since it is their impression that USGA rank and file walking rules officials have been overruled twice by the networks and USGA status wanks on decisions....to protect Tiger into the weekend of the US Open.

Saying that is completely whack. Not liking the guy is one thing, but come on!

kind of funny (ironic) that you introduce "liking" or "not liking" in the mix. i don't dislike Tiger, i have a problem with his "fans". most of whom are all about on the same level as "the Bulls are my team" people of the 90's. or Britney fans. they don't really like or prefer the game of golf per se, but the star quality and sublimated attraction to the idea of "dominance" as an authoritarian theme. i'm a fan of the game of golf, not really any one player. there's a BIG difference.

i'm not saying he isn't the best player in the game, what i'm saying is he isn't that dominant in the majors as you humpers like to believe. the fact he's *not won* a couple down the stretch shows he's not bullet proof.

he's never won coming from behind in a major.

until he passes Nicklaus, scoreboard=Jack.

just because YOU like Tiger and bunny hump him like a jackrabbit on crack...doesn't *by necessity* mean he's the best of all-time. if you want to play the "players in sport X are better than they were in the past card"...fine. but, *asserting* that Jack would "get smoked" is not a argument, it's an assertion. and your opinion.

YOU mentioned technology, which in your your scenario where "Jack is getting smoked" it gives me pause that you introduce a variable (that you, then, deny) into the discussion.

Tiger ain't the same Tiger of 01. do all the gymnastics you want, but he's beatable today. Eldrick may be the greatest golfer of all-time, but he's just that right now: "may be".

ahh yes and the traditional tiger v. tiger-hater battles begin because the guy was a quarter inch from being the first guy to shoot a 62 in a major.

Jack had better, tougher competition week in and week out than Eldrick does. There isn't a contingent on the current tour that matches up to Arnie, Trevino, Watson, Player, Miller, and in latter time Norman.

Tiger may very well be the greatest golfer of all time eventually, but right now he's still chasing Jack's shadow. The media and the public won't give him that full recognition until he's holding up the trophy from the win of his 19th major.

my sister used to work at the Mont. her stories about Dean are both stupid and hate the guy more than i already did.

i like women as much as the next guy, but....

not even, you used the phrase "proof" or some derivation three times in that post--and you tried to puss "Rory" on me.

i asked you what you meant. i have not at any time denied Tiger is the best player in the game today. what i ask is why you and others get a hotsie on to defend him at any criticism?

why? because your mind has been colonized by the "star system".

Rory=not a metaphor for all of golf. nor was it a major.

i'm not a Tiger hater. i admit i used to be. but, go back to my post where i say it's about his fans. same with Daly.

i'm a fan of the game.

You're right, it wasn't a major..however he's shown more bravado that the rest of the field during the course of this year. Of course, you can show bravado like that when nobody knows who you are, and you've got a grand total of 11 wins in your career.

I'd agree that a majority of Tiger fans in terms of the gallery are borderline annoying, and the same could be said for Lefty fans or Daly fans, or Els fans, etc...

However, if the argument is has he been the most dominant over the past decade the answer is a pretty obvious yes. Has he been as dominant over the past 5 years as the first 5? Probably not. Is he considered a top contender in every major? I'd say yes. Is there any sort of consistency from the rest of the field to challenge him for that #1 ranking in the world? Not really, everyone seems to have a year or two where they make a run and then they somewhat fade away (Els, Vijay, and Lefty anyone?)

Truthfully, it seems to me that the golf media (and to a lesser degree the public) tend to bend over backwards trying to recreate the Jack v. Arnie scenario with Tiger v. (insert latest potential competitor) and that's where a majority of overall backlash begins.

YOU mentioned technology, which in your your scenario where "Jack is getting smoked" it gives me pause that you introduce a variable (that you, then, deny) into the discussion.

Not true.

You put Jack in his prime against Tiger now, with all the new technology and added yardage, Jack gets smoked

This quote is saying that both could use new technology and added yardage. Not just Tiger.

And we're just talking about golf/golfers for christ sake, no need for YOU to get that worked up about it.
