Okay, so I've got a car question. My dad has tried to fix it, and he's pretty handy with cars but thus far nothing he's done has improved the situation much.

I have this 1990-1992 (forget the exact year) Dodge Ram with a V-8 engine.

The problem is that I have to accelerate REALLY slowly or the truck will start popping..it almost feels like popcorn with a random backfire here and there. It also does this if I go up an incline/hill. It loses horsepower as well when trying to go up a hill, and it accelerates really slowly. The truck also shakes all the time.

Now, my dad thinks that one of the cylinders isn't firing, so he replaced all the spark plugs which seemed to improve things only slightly. He did say it also needs new spark plug wires, but those have not been replaced yet.

The one thing that does help is that it has this little button where you can turn off the Overdrive; well, it runs MUCH better if I keep the overdrive off all the time but I'm told this is really bad on the engine and yet the engine seemingly runs much much better that way. The engine doesn't pop as bad and I'm able to accelerate faster.

So, WTF is wrong?

Vacuum leak? Before you take my input, realize that I have blown the motors in two vehicles over the years.

Sounds like a bad distributor cap or wires to me.. have you splashed any water up on the motor lately?
