Training Camp, Day 2 Notebook By Erik Scalavino, Patriots.com and PFW Staff Writer

A rundown of all the important happenings from Day 2 of Patriots Training Camp.

Play of the Day
Matt Gutierrez pass to Bam Childress
In offense-vs-defense scrimmaging, Gutierrez play-actioned, then rolled out to his left. With three defenders bearing down on him, the rookie free agent threw across his body, slinging a perfect, tight spiral on a 30-yard rope to Bam Childress.

Who’s Hot
Jabar Gaffney
The veteran wide receiver has been making some impressive catches the past two days, on both long and short routes.

Who’s Not
Tom Malone
For the second consecutive day, the first-year punter struggled with his consistency.

Quote of the Day
“If I have to listen to it during practice, it’s fine.”
~ LB Adalius Thomas
(Thomas was asked if he likes country music. Throughout practice, the sounds of several country artists could be heard playing a concert inside Gillette Stadium)

More Day 2 Notes

Only one practice on Saturday, from 2:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon. It was open to the media, but closed to the public because Gillette Stadium was also hosting the 4th Annual New England Country Music Festival.

Another warm, but not uncomfortably humid, day for practice. A brief sun-shower brought some welcome relief.

Players donning red (no-contact) jerseys again included RB Laurence Maroney, LBs Junior Seau and Eric Alexander, and all three QBs (Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, and Matt Gutierrez).

Asante Samuel’s holdout continues.

First-round pick Brandon Meriweather, however, has signed and was at practice Saturday. He has changed his jersey number from 31 to 38.

When asked whether Meriweather would play more at corner or safety, head coach Bill Belichick replied, “Well, we'll find out. We'll work him at both spots. People on our team are going to have to have some versatility and play different spots anyway, so he falls into that category.”

TE Garrett Mills did not attend practice. No reason was given for his absence.

All the players on the PUP list remained there and did not take part in Saturday’s practice: DL Richard Seymour, WR Troy Brown, WR Chad Jackson, TE David Thomas, DB Mel Mitchell, DB Eddie Jackson, and WR Donte Stallworth.

After taking most of Friday off, P Josh Miller did some kicking today and looked good doing it.

Oklahoma University head football coach Bob Stoops and staff were special guests on the practice field this afternoon.

Belichick’s reason for inviting them? “We go into the colleges all fall long and also in the spring to work guys out, so we try to have a good working and reciprocal relationship with them,” he said after practice. “If they want to come in, and they help us out a lot, then we try to give it back to them.”

Kickoff return team was a focus of part of practice. CB Ellis Hobbs, WR Wes Welker, RB Sammy Morris, DB Willie Andrews, and DB Gemara Williams took turns fielding kicks..

K Stephen Gostkowski continues his hot streak. He made all 7 field goal attempts to end practice.

I think he has a beach house in Foxborough.

And Carol prefers Massachusetts and hates Norman.

Etc.
