Did someone ask about the origin of the phrase "brand new"? The original meaning of "brand" was "burning or fire," including a furnace, forge, or kiln. Something "brand new" was an item, whether pottery or forged metal, fresh from the fires of its creation. The phrase dates back to the late 16th century. Shakespeare used the expression "fire new" to mean the same thing. There.

After that Senior crack? No thanks. Wouldn't want to "rob the cradle."
But the watch is similar to one of the ones that my Dad had - hence, the old man watch.
And military time isn't a big deal. Had to use it all the time in the hospital too.

And as an added bonus, it has

I used to have a source at Fossil. They give great employees discounts. I had a friend get me a wallet for $5. It was supposed to be $45. That's what I call profit margine. I also have a Mickey Mouse watch. I love it.

Check this out. This is one of my ALL TIME woulda coulda stories. In 1996 when the Cowboys were in the Superbowl, Kidd Kraddick on KissFM had a song writing contest for a trip for trip for 2 to the Superbowl. I wrote a song (I played in bands, long hair, the whole bit) and won the contest. I took my dad and we headed to Tempe. We went to the game and afterward I was sitting in an airport bar talking to some guys about the game. One guy was talking about getting rid of O'donnell and the guy next to me said, "Hey, we'll give you Switzer and we'll take O'Donnel." Then the guy kept harping an Switzer. I told him that I was a big fan of Switzer's aand I would appreciate it if he would stop talking bad about Switzer. He said that it was a free country and he thought Switzer was a joke... Dale Hansen... Blah blah blah. I told the dude that he needed to be quiet. Then he started attacking ME because of my hair and that I was greasy (um, trust me, I was very grooming intensive) and that I was a loser and would never have one of these. He had on a stainless steel Rolex. I was about to show him my solid gold Rolex when HOLY CRAP! I switched it out for my Mickey Mouse watch so it wouldn't get stolen. I basically told the guy that he had me on the watch deal, but he was much older than me and wasted and I could still kick his ***. I told the bar tender to watch that guy (the guy turned out to be a lawyer) but who stepped in tto save the day?/ Those two hispanic lawyers that were always on TV back then. Was it Condos and Condos? I think that was it. Anyway. I have always wanted to go show that jackass that I had a nicer watch than he did. I get a kick out of that. Damn the luck.

ANYWAY! I actually got to have dinner with Dale Hansen after the Byron Nelson at Cool River and I whipped his *** for an HOUR over Barry!!! I was WASTED! I had written a theme for his show on the Ticket and so he was somewhat obligated to listen to me. He is super loud and he'll try and steaaamroller you unless you are too drunk to care. Well, I was. I was giving him so much **** over Barry that he told me the REAL story why he didn't like Barry. He said that Barry got tipsy and said in an on air radio interview that Dale cheated on his wife. THAT's the deal. It had little to do with the other stuff between them.

Jason White's Third Knee

Ultimately, I think that Dale IS a good guy, but he's full of himself and he does have the wrong idea about Barry. Dale was a lot of fun to hang around, but I'd probably have a better time with Barry. How could those two possibly get along. Dale's ego couldn't handle Barry's thunder.

I just came across this golf trivia tidbit:
On his 45th birthday, April 14, 1968, Argentinian Roberto DiVicenzo botched a chance at a play-off against Bob Goalby at the Masters. DiVicenzo had a birdie 3 on the 17th hole, but his scorecard showed a 4. Once he signed the card, he was stuck with the 4 and lost by a stroke. His comment: "What a stupid I am..."

Now I have been staining my deck and summer is about to roll in. I gotta tell ya, I've never been to the sf.com tailgate, but I think that the U of I has a spectacular tailgate area and totally dusts OU in that regard. It's just as well, because we need something to do up here when the football games are on, since winning doesn't seem to be a priority. When I was moving to this college town, I thought, "The home of Red Grange, Dick Butkus, Grabowski, etc. This is going to be awesome! Real football weather and the Illini are a tough spoiler team... like Mizzou." Boy was I wrong. The football sucks. the fans suck, but man can they tailgate!

The deck is now stained a loverly Olymppia 716 Natural Cedar tone. It looks even nicer than it did before. The deck took me a while to build so I'll try and keep it for a while. You saw the old one. Too splintery for the squirt.

The little sprinkler system I bought it really cool. It was $30 at Lowe's and you can get a lot done with it.

No, it just blows. Mr, just called. The UM goalie was making some great saves. Our guys should have adjusted and taken higher shots. But they didn't.
Out shot them 2 to 1. Some guy tripped my younger son and then came back and kneed him in the abdomen. The refs didn't see it, but Mr thought it was intentional - he is usually a more objective judge of that than I am. But Kev is okay - which is the important thing. The teams were tied going into the last minute, until we got a call. Mr said it was not the kind of call you usually see called in a quarterfinal game - especially in a tied game. Our kid and another were going for the puck, sticks got tangled and the other kid (in trying to put out his stick) hit himself in the face with his own stick - but we got the call. Breaks of the game. Shoulda played better and it wouldn't have come down to this play.

BajaOklahoma
4/18/2004, 06:01 PM
Actually, the guys do inline. Ice is over for them. So the smell is worse, but the rink isn't too cold - usually a bit hot for the guys.

I am not too bad to sit next to - unless you are a whorn. (Probably has to do with the roundhouse swing at the older son). I do prefer to sit with our fans, away from the opposition, so I don't have to listen to them. But I can do it and be nice to sit next to.... unless you hurt my kid.
Kev is not someone that you want to do cheap stuff to - he gets even. He waits, plotting and watching, and then gets you back - usually without getting caught. Oh, and don't hurt his brother either. The funniest thing is that he is over 6 feet tall and skinny enough to be a save the children poster kid. But he is all muscle.
I don't like cheap stuff - whether it be the opposition, my kids or their teammates. We made that clear years ago - play clean or you won't play. Usually the better players are the cleanest players. Less skilled players use the cheap stuff to try to even up the playing field.

Sigh. Deep breath. Off my soapbox now.

I'm afraid I'm not sure what the "coupler" is, but I got a hand-me-down gas grill with the igniter dangling. I learned 2 things: 1-You can light it just fine with one of those LONG butane lighters; and 2- if you hold the business end of the igniter in one hand and push the button with the other, you get a nifty little shock. Being no engineer :( , I'm guessing the igniter creates a spark by friction.

Thunder, read the post again - roasting, NOT grilling. Hint: aluminum pan, roasting bag. NOT grilling. So it is throw it on the grill (in the bag which is in the pan), leave it cooking for a couple of hours and check it every so often. Our grill has a thermometer built in the cover - almost oven-like.

But I will picture you in the eskimo suit, cigar (bad Thunder - you know the risks) and drink (okay, you can have one bad habit, not to excess) in hand. Tee-hee, get your wife to take your picture and post it here.

Only 20 days of school left.

We now have birds at our house.
A dove built a nest in the hanging basket by the front door. She is pretty calm as we go in and out - just don't be a deliveryman. Our pizza guy almost dropped the pizza as she flew toward him.
On the back patio, we have a robin who built a nest in another hanging basket. Two of the eggs hatched yesterday, before the storm came in. The babies look okay - mom brought them several worms today. The robin is much more nervous than the dove - we can't even peek out the blinds without scaring her off.
We are going to have to let the plants die though - the water won't be good fro the nests.

This too good a thread to let it die yet!
The robins are still alive - amazing how fast they are changing. Two for sure, possibly 3 (hard to see into the nest. And that dove is just sittin on her nest - no signs of the babies yet.

I am still working on getting a third dog - :D We shall see.

I ended up with the Brinkman from Sam's. It's pretty awesome, very sturdy, the best casters I've ever seen on a grill in this $ range, and still has great features. I will be grilling for about 10 employees tonight. The menu will have ribeyes, porterhouses, babyback ribs, and a beercan chicken. If the weather was just a little nicer... dang.

TigerGirl, I like the smoker. You guys should have fun with that. I can still smokek stuff, but not as easily. I am more of a hands on griller anyway. Looks neat though!

TU, if you are a griller like me, definately hit Sam's. You'll like the look of this thing. It's really tough. It's a beast.

Oh yeah, How about our Sooners? Nice to see them doing well... what's up w/Ohio State? They put out more NFL talent in a year than we do in a decade! I swear it's a bunch of hype. Can we PLEASE play them soon? I would love to hand them their asses.

The Richter Scale use to measure earthquakes, is named for Dr. Charles Richter (1900-1985). With Beno Gutenberg in the 1930s, Richter developed a device to measure the movement of the Earth during a quake. The device is essentially a continually unwinding roll of paper over which is suspended a pendulum with a marking device. The scale is "logarithmic" (whatever that means), so that an earthquake rated 7 is 10 times stronger that a 6. Today, April 26, is Richter's birthday; I figured you'd all want to know.

By logarithmic, they mean the ratings are exponential.

Richter set the 0 magnitude as an event that happened 100km away that moved the needle on his device 1 micrometer. Newer equipment is more sensative and can take readings below the 0 rating. 0 is not a nonevent, it is just a mild event. Like Farenheit, we can take readings below 0. Sorry for the spelling. From AP
Giant Snails Seized From Schools
Snails Can Transmit Meningitis

POSTED: 12:33 p.m. EDT April 27, 2004

MILWAUKEE -- Federal health officials have seized several dangerous pests called Giant African Land Snails from Wisconsin classrooms and have started a national search for the creatures, which reproduce rapidly, destroy plants and can transmit meningitis.

The snails, which are illegal to have in the United States, were used in classrooms by unwitting school officials, said Willie Harris, eastern regional director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Safeguarding, Intervention and Trade Compliance Program.

Snails have been seized in the past month from Wisconsin cities including Big Bend, Menasha and Milwaukee. Officials so far have not found any others elsewhere.

They are concerned the snails, about the size of a person's hand, could be transported to states with warmer climates, where they can rapidly reproduce and destroy plants.

In 1966, a Miami boy smuggled three Giant African Land Snails into the country. His grandmother eventually released them into a garden, and in seven years there were more than 18,000 of them. The eradication program took 10 years, according to the USDA.

Five of the snails donated to Nicolet Elementary School in Menasha by a parent were seized after teachers learned they were illegal, said the school's principal, Linda Joosten.

"They were very cool creatures," Joosten said.

The snails, native to Africa but also found in parts of Asia, are known to consume as many as 500 different plants and their mucous can transmit meningitis.

Snail smugglers can face fines of up to $1,000 per charge. Harris said people who have the snails without knowing they are illegal will not face punishment.

This member of the rodent family is native to South America, and it was introduced both accidentally and purposely in the waterways in several American states. The species has proved to be overly destructive of habitat in some areas, creating problems for muskrats and waterfowl. This species can tolerate winters in temperate areas only. An important furbearer in Louisiana and Texas coastal area, nutria are viewed as detrimental in most other areas.

Description

Adult nutria are about 14 inches long from the nose to the base of the tail. The tail itself is 12 to 17 inches long, round, and hairless. Coloration is brownish, and both sexes are similar in appearance and weight. The nutria is unique in that it has 3 sets or lengths of fur. Primary guard hairs are about 3 inches in length. Beneath this layer is the secondary guard hairs, which are more numerous and give the species its overall coloration. The underfur is short, and less dense than either a muskrat or beaver underfur.

The whiskers on a nutria are obvious. These whiskers are about 4 inches in length, and very numerous. Teeth number 20, and include 4 large incisors, and allows the nutria to cut off underwater plants without getting water into its mouth. The mouth also has glands located near the corners which produce oils that the nutria uses to comb and waterproof its fur. Nutria average 16 to 18 pounds in weight. Occasional individuals may weigh 25 pounds or more. Also unique is the location of the mammary glands on the females. The teats are locate high on the sides of the nutria, which allows young nutria to nurse as the mother swims in the water.

Front feet have five toes, including a small toe corresponding to our thumb. Hind feet are much larger, and unique in that all toes are connected by a skin web except for the toe corresponding to our little toe.

Note: May be cooked in a variety of ways. Often, creative Cajin cooks have substituted the bountiful Nutria for other more traditional meat products. Due to the intensity of traditional Cajin spices, many diners have not been able to tell the difference between what they are actually eating and what they think they are eating.

Sorry about your friend. On a related note, a few years ago down here in Florida, an organized group of motorcycle riders lobbied the legislature to change the mandatory helmet law for bike riders.
A woman in SW Florida orgainzed the effort and was president of the group that led the way to get the law changed.
Eventually, they won out based on "individual freedom" to make the choice of wearing a helmet while riding if you were over 21.
Saddly, the first bike fatality after the passing of the "freedom of choice" law regarding usage of helmets was..........

Yep, the woman who started the movement. Killed in a motorcycle acciident, not wearing a helmet.
