My Brother is a Certified Oracle Administrator.

He has a Math degree from OU.

The thing is...I've seen the hours he's had to keep to get the big bucks they pay him. It seems like he never gets a break.

What would your dream job be if you wanted to make great money and still be able to stay under 60 hours per week with say a month of vacation to use every year?

Is there such a job out there in the Computer World?

Would consulting be better?

Just a thought that came to mind tonight...

(i have nothing to do with said opening, i just saw it on the website)

the vacation part is right on (generally ~5 weeks to start, plus about a week during Winter Break)... i'm not really sure on how the hours/on-call would be for that particular job though

If you're in IT, and you don't want your arse worked to the bone, you need to stay out of development and operations group positions.

Development has the death marches, operations has to make sure stuff is running 24x7. Being management doesn't help much if at all.

Unfortunately, almost everyone in IT is in one of those two types of departments.

About the only position type I can think of right now would be "Design", by which I mean, you design the overall system, and you hand it off to someone else to implement and support. Those jobs are really fscking hard to find though, because you only need a few dedicated designers per hundred or thousand developers and/or operations guys.

We talked about it for awhile...

He's working on a plan now...

I feel better after getting advice here and listening to him for a couple of hOUrs...

I'm sure it's all going to work OUt eventually.
