View Full Version : Getting rid of outdoor flies on my dog

Those damn flies are biting my dog's ears 'til they are both bleeding. We put "Swat" on his ears every day. It helps for a while.
I thought about fly strips but 1) they're messy 2) don't know how well they work outside 3) not sure where to get them
Was told to hang a clear bag filled with water and pieces of aluminum foil outside. Supposed to drive off the flies. Sounds stupid and sounds like it wouldn't work, but I've never tried it before.
Any other/better ideas?

Have the dog's ears removed.

Dress him in a little doggie hoodie.

Both good suggestions. It's too hot for a hoodie, despite what my kids say. Removing his ears........I'll think about it. But I wanted to get rid of the flies more than the ears. See the difference?

If you can get him a job at Whataburger they'll provide a hair net.

That would help keep the flies off the ears.

Tie a flyswatter to his tail. YWIA.

Doc,
If that is your real name, it's time to hook Fido up with some chill time under your A/C...as in, in da house.

I just put two around my kennels based on suggestions from folks that have used them for a few years, seems to be working. Not sure how it would work if your dog doesn't have one specific area that he uses.

Alternatively, duct tape a rack of ribs from the grocery store to his back. The flies will eat that and leave Fido's ears alone.

You're welcome.

In this case, the KY stands for Kentucky. I think.

There's a lot of really good advice in this thread.....

Are you picking up the dog poo every day? We only get flies if I skip a couple of days of poop patrol. Of course, my dog is on the couch in front of a fan most of the time, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Nasty dogs with dog-poo-covered ears.

Well, yeah. If he poops in your house in front of a fan, I think there would be tons of hygiene issues. :)

A friend told me that an old lady told him to add a couple tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the dogs water dish. Every couple days add a little more until you have 1/2 cup vinegar to five or six cups of water. Supposedly the flies will stop bothering your dog in about a week.

I don't know if it works, but it's probably worth a try, and it won't hurt the dog.

Hire a oSu coed to spend the summer laying out in your yard. She will draw the flys off the dog and she can zap them with her tongue.

Send him over to Michael Vicks house for a few days. Problem solved.

Go to the farm supply store. Get an ear tag for cattle. It looks like a yellow stop sign. Hang that on his collar. End of flies, fleas and ticks.

This is the time of year that family pets should be indoors and away from the summer insects and heat; unless they have to go poopy or tinkle.

I'm thinking with all the cruel answers there I'm thinking you all must be cat people. How repulsive! My German Shephard Bubba(given name-Sir Brandon Joshua Braveheart) has the same problem with flys and nothing seems to work.I feel your pain brother.

They also sell "Seargents" collars at any store for about treefiddy for a few of them, they also sell dips for this type of thing, just ask your Vet. Also keep him bathed. Atleast hose him down every day if he is outside in the sun. Also a good outside fan for him to sit in front of at night will become his favorite spot in no time. But what do I know.

Stop petting him. Eventually, the smell will leave his body and all should be o.k.
