Another thing to remember with HD TVs: there's no more static. The signal is digital and it either comes in perfectly or not at all.

Huh? Static <=> pixelation... after having used an HDTV for several years now I can't say I agree. But I wouldn't go back to normal TV for sure.

Unless you've got some connection issues, there shouldn't be any static. Pixelation will always be there if it's compressed too much (or done sloppily).

Or if you have display issues. Or if you have bandwidth issues.

Yes.

You get what you pay for. If you're not a videophile, it's an OK TV and very reasonably priced. If you're an AV purist like myself, then it's not going to bring the kind of value you're looking for.

Yes, Most of the lower grade panels are the remnants (sp) of the majors that did not meet their standards.

I switched to HDMI for my HD cable box (to free up a component input). I haven't noticed any difference but there is a long delay when changing channels in HD.

my friend have the same problem. She's got a Samsung DLP connected to a HD cable box.

:D

Apparently, there's Monster Cable reps going around to Best Buy training blue shirts that only Monster Cable 1080p certified HDMI cables have the bandwidth to pass 1080p.

Heh.

what kind of cable should I be using? I currently have a mid range HDMI.

You're fine. HDMI passes a digital signal, so unless you're seeing dropouts, pixelization, or sparkles then you're getting every bit the same picture that a $150 HDMI cable would give you.

I'd buy ones that conduct electricity if I were you.

HDMI is the ticket to the path of Pay for Play in the future. Its fine to use. I still choose to use componant video cables.

Everything will be subscription based in the future. Best not to worry about it and just take it in stride.

Hey 85, I'm thinking about getting an appletv thingy for my new pioneer, is it a waste? I'm worried about the compression of mpeg4.

Frozen Sooner
7/17/2007, 09:31 PM
mpeg-4 compression is fine at a high bitrate.

Apple iTunes files are not at a high bitrate.

Just like everything else in life, if you throw enough bits at a problem it's not a problem anymore.

Yeah, I usually just rip my dvds and input them into itunes for the pod, I guess, I'll just re-rip at a higher frame size and bitrate. I don't buy movies or tv shows off of itunes. I just like the idea of it as a player and somewhere to house the vids.
