at my daughter's pending reciting of the nuptials in a few months. She requested this of me recently.

My first thought was ZZ Top's "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide."

Suggestions? The first hillbilly who sez "Safety Dance" gets negged.

Louis Armstrong does a version of "When you wish upon a star" that I've seen people dance to at weddings.

If you can stand a country song "I Loved Her First" seems custom-made for such an occasion.

Here are some lyrics to a Tim McGraw song called "my little girl"...

Verse 1:
Gotta hold on easy as I let you go.
Gonna tell you how much I love you,
though you think you already know.
I remember I thought you looked like an angel wrapped in pink so soft and warm.
You've had me wrapped around your finger since the day you were born.

Chorus:
Your beautiful baby from the outside in.
Chase your dreams but always know the road that'll lead you home again.
Go on, take on this whole world.
But to me you know you'll always be, my little girl.

Verse 2:
When you were in trouble that crooked little smile could melt my heart of stone.
Now look at you, I've turned around and you've almost grown.
Sometimes you're asleep I whisper "I Love You!" in the moonlight at your door.
As I walk away, I hear you say, "Daddy Love You More!".

(Repeat Chorus)

Verse 3:
Someday, some boy will come and ask me for your hand.
But I won't say "yes" to him unless I know, he's the half
that makes you whole, he has a poet's soul, and the heart of a man's man.
I know he'll say that he's in love.
But between you and me. He won't be good enough!

Especially if there's a competent vocalist present.

It's perfect for a DIGNIFIED slow waltz with your daughter and there won't be a dry eye in the crowd. She'll love you all the more for it.
Ya'll can shuck n' stomp, clog, Lambada, and do the Twist later.
This one will MEAN something.

You taught her to love

Nows she's gone and learned how to love someone who was not present at her birth, but you pray will love her half as much as you do.

At my boy's wedding last Saturday they did a two-step number that I don't have a clue about. It was aight. But here's the deal. WTF is up with everybody wanting to make everybody blubber with some sad song about a pop losing his daughter? Hell man, the daddy oughta be tickled pink some poor slob is taking the money pit outta the house.

Oh yeah, they all did the ****ing YMCA too. But not until they did the conga line thing and the bride got everyone into the line. ****ed me off. Is there anything gayer than the YMCA? I mean other than the macarena?

That would be true in my case. I have conveyed this thought many times over. Still, this will be one of the biggest, most important days of her life. I will go through the motions and let her call the shots.

So, I give it four minutes and I do the dance with her. So many other young women don't have their daddy's around. It ain't asking much of me.

Oh I think it's great to do the daddy-daughter dance. I just don't like the whole "let's play the saddest song we can to make everybody cry" mindset.

Speaking of making everybody cry, during the wedding ceremony my son had his fiance's 6 year old daughter up there with them. He knelt down and put a locket around her neck while saying "Chandler, you are my daughter now and I love you so much. This locket signifies that love and my promise to love you and care for you until I die." The little girl wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed and hugged him. She had big ol' alligator tears streaming down her cheeks. I looked around and the whole place was blubbering.

That's pretty cool for your son to have done that and made that pledge in front of everyone.

Was the natural daddy around, or is he still around? Your son made a commitment to not only his new bride, but his new step-daughter. Kudos to him for taking on responsibility. My best buddy took on two step-daughters when he married his wife, then adopted and raised them since ages five and seven (they're grown now). The natural father is a scumbag and sold his kids to avoid paying child support. My buddy said he tried to contact them when they turned 18, and they told him to get lost. He asked if he could come to their HS graduation, and they said "It'd be best if you didn't."
