Canada puts muscle behind claim to Northwest Passage

TORONTO — Canada announced plans Monday to increase its Arctic military presence in an effort to assert sovereignty over the Northwest Passage, a potentially oil-rich region the United States claims is international territory.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said six to eight patrol ships will guard what he says are Canadian waters. A deep-water port will also be built in a region the U.S. Geological Survey estimates has as much as 25 percent of the world's undiscovered oil and gas.

"Canada has a choice when it comes to defending our sovereignty over the Arctic. We either use it or lose it. And make no mistake, this government intends to use it," Harper said.

U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins has criticized Harper's promise to defend the Arctic, claiming the Northwest Passage as "neutral waters." But Wilkins declined to comment Monday, said U.S. Embassy spokesman James Foster.

"It's an international channel for passage," Foster said of the disputed waterway.

I can just see the foreign policy debates 20 years from now. Instead of who lost China, it will be who let Canada grow a pair.

Anyway, how can Canada lay claim to just a bunch of ice and a shrinking polar bear population. It'd be all gone anyway.

And our medicial system is working out so wonderfully? Please define failing miserably.

I just had to tell my Mom who has some serious health issues and has an appointment to see a specialist in August, just what does she expect the specialist to do without exams or test results. Given the urgency, shouldn't she like be taking these medical exams or something beforehand?

Our current system is way too wasteful, too much money and unnecessarily high insurance premiums oriented.

Outsourcing of healhcare to Thailand and other countries willing to do the same treatments for one-third of the cost isn't a realistic long-term solution.

While you are correct about everything you said, I'm having a hard time believing that adding the federal government to the equation will improve efficiency, make it more cost effective, and maintain high standards of care. Call me cynical I guess.

Chuck Bao

Very good point. I'm not seeing any solution and there damn well should be one.

I'm stilled stunned. Thailand is touting itself as a healthcare center for the world. For Thai citizens, the Thai government successfully implemented a 75 cent per hospital visit program regardless of the procedure and length of stay.

Then I see my close friend die of AIDS complications. He shouldn't have. AIDS drugs are available at a tiny, tiny fraction of the cost used in the US. There was no reason to just allow him to die, but the doctors did. I have the money and resources to fly him to the US, but I didn't. They, the Thai doctors, let him die.

I'm thinking that Thailand is actually a model that the US will follow, even if you don't subscribe to socialized medicine. The rich will get better care. The poor will get substandard care and the middle class will get just a little better than the poor. Anyway, most of us will be poor by the time we get into our 80s and 90s.

never said it couldn't be better but we still got the best. I sure don't think turning it over to the government with it's two feuding factions is going to make it better.

speaking of our current system, we have it way too good. Our people live like pigs they have no concept of living healthy or self discipline, we want to be able to eat like ****, not excercise and blame someone like the government for not being able to fix us and not only fix us but fix us cheap.

on a side totally unrelated to anything above, my best wishes and prayers go out to your mother.

Wow, thanks for the offer fellas, but I think I'll be fine. Harper is a dick though, so let me get that out of the way first. He's a GW wannabe with a really bad haircut. Statements like the one he made really make me wonder about those fools out west that voted him in. At least he isn't french....that's about the nicest thing I can say about him.

Don't recall who said it, but I don't know how it can be said that our medical system is failing miserably? I'm quite fine, knowing that I can go out and bust my leg up doing some goofy sh!t, and I go to the hostipital, they fix me up free of charge and send me packing. Sometimes, we get free drugs too...the good kind too.

Temperature wise, we've been sitting at about 40C with the humidity factored in. (104F for those mathematically challenged.)

Daylight is running at about the same as it is down there.

Hot chicks, there are plenty (just not where I work:mad: ). Shania Twain is worth big marks IMO.

It aint free. I spent some time up north and most the Canadians I ran into were coming across the border for medical services. They hated the medical system up there.

BTW did you see Twain before she got her grill worked on? Worked on by a non socialized dentist.

I think that was probably due to the length of wait they had for certain services. CAT scans and stuff like that, can take some time if the condition isn't life-threatening. The thought of having to pay for medical services is foreign to me.

Dental is not covered under government plan, and they have just recently taken eye exams off the list as well. Those have to be paid, unless you have a health plan through work, which the majority of employers have.
