Hey, I drove through that on Friday on my way to Texoma for some striper fishing....about 30 miles south of there I get the call that Texoma is closed.

If there is one thing that you would think would be ok in a flood it would be water based activities...stupid rain.

For those who know the area around Lake Travis by The Oasis.
This is a picture of the closed boat launch at the bottom of Bullick Hollow just before getting to Volente Road on Thursday morning, Volente Road and Bullick Hollow Road in those areas are now closed. There was ZERO water in this entire bay earlier this spring, 4 months ago you could have walked out there as far as a 1/2 mile before encountering water. The lake was at 693.0 when that pic was taken, the lake has added about 7 feet of more water and was at 699.67 at 11:00am and is expected to add another foot or two. They have 4 floodgates wide open (19,080 cfs) and they area expected to be open for the next 3 to 4 weeks.

All the Highland Lakes except for Buchanan (Lake Austin, Lake Travis and Inks Lake) are closed to recreational boating until further notice.

So Lake Texoma is supposed to rise over the dam/spillway sometimes this evening I heard.

That does not sound good.

My girl, Tera Blake, was just telling me about that. She said that all the hillbillies are out to watch them open it up for the third time in history. They are going to open the gates sometime between midnight and sunrise.

When are we getting our mobile homes?

I think FEMA gave them to Native Americans so they would have something other than substandard living, after the trailers sat in Arkansas for two years.

Causes flooding down stream?

Why?

All lakes have dams that routinely release water....I was just wondering why they didn't do that at Texoma.

Lake Texoma Inching Closer to Spillway

The rain continues to fall, and Lake Texoma continues to rise. This week, it's expected that Lake Texoma will reach the spillway. KTEN's Kristi Branam has the most recent updates.

The Army Corp of Engineers has a 24 hour surveillance on the Denison Dam, watching the water level. But, they don't anticipate any problems, once the level reaches the spillway.

The Lake Texoma water level has only reached the spillway two times. The first time in 1957, and the most memorable time in may of 1990, when the lake reached the highest pool of record at 644.76 feet. 17 Years later, Lake Texoma is expected to reach the spillway once again.

10 Year-old Teague Fox went to the lake to see the high levels. He said, "It's gonna go over probably in my words."

Al and Eileen Carr were also onlookers at the lake. They said, "It's pretty scary. Yeah, it's pretty scary."

The flood gates have not been open since June 19th because of flooding downstreem. But when Lake Texoma reaches 640 feet, the flood gates have to open again.

Lake Manager Ron Jordan said, "Right now the river is falling. So, if it continues to fall when we open the flood gates, it will just take the place of that water, and we'll remain bank full. If there's additional rainfall downstream already occuring, then the floodwater from Texoma will add to that."

Jordan says this year, though, will be no comparison to 1990, when a maximum of 150 thousand cubic feet of water a second was flowing down the red river. He added, "We will not exceed what happened in 1990. We will not approach that, but there are many things that can happen in the next week. Hopefully, fingers crossed, we won't get that kind of inflow this time, and we'll keep the red river within its banks."

At 4pm, Monday afternoon, Lake Texoma's level sits just over 635 feet. It's expected to reach the spillway on July 6th, and a total level of just over 641 feet.

Onlookers Gather at Lake Texoma Spillway
Posted: July 4, 2007 06:32 PM CDT
Fireworks and BBQs are generally how we choose to celebrate the Fourth of July, but what about flood waters and snap shots? KTEN's Jhen Kordela reports on the unusual way many local residents celebrated their holiday.

In Denison, hundreds of onlookers have been stopping by to take pictures of the water as it reaches the spillway. The corp of engineers opened the flood gates just after eight Wednesday morning. The flood gates are now releasing 135,000 gallons per second. That would be like 15 tanker trucks going through the flood gates every second.

The corp will increase that flow tomorrow by 90,000 gallons. Even though the flood gates were opened earlier than anticipated because of receded water in the Red River, the plan still remains to release a total of 225,000 gallons here at the dam.

"We were out here looking at the dam, and it's about to go over the spillway. onlooker Rocky Phillips says. "Last time I was out here, I was seven years old and this is just pretty cool to look at."

"We came out to see because our parent told us that this was gonna be a one-time experience, but they were lucky enough to get to witness it two times," says Dillon Chambers with his friends.

Adds Riley Peckenpaugh: "And I see down there some signs are flooded, the roads are flooded, the parking lot is flooded."

The latest predictions show the water will reach the spillway Thursday at 8 p.m. at the latest. The water is expected to reach its highest point on the July 9th 641.5 feet.

Drove over the Red River north of Denison this weekend and the Red River was totally blue, full of lake water. Weird sight. I'll post a pic tonight.

We found this thing walking across our farm. I guess it was a refugee of the Lake Texoma flooding.

The thing was big enough to jump out of the back of the pick-up truck and bounced down the road. It didn't seem to be even annoyed by this.

It must of been a bit weird though for the cars following to see a cross between ET and a coon dog sticking its head out for a while.

We were told that we could sell it in a market in Dallas.

We couldn't. And, I wonder how old it was.

It may sound really weird, but it's large eyes were like curious and not malevolent like normal turtle or reptile eyes. I can't explain it but it was like this turtle had a soul, or at least been there and done that a few times.

Anyway, I'm hoping that it finds its way back to Lake Texoma and lives out the rest of its natural life.

went flying over the lake today. You could see the Red River flowing into about the middle of the lake. It was weird to see that much of the lake being red in color.
