My grandfather passed away three weeks ago and one of the things he left me was his pistol. It's a Ruger .22 Magnum. He had the thing as far back as I can remember - but it may not have been fired since 1985 or so. I remember him shooting turtles with it at his lake house - the turtles would eat the fish off the fish line hanging from the pier.

You know anything about this one?

Nope. I sure don't.

I'm more of a rifle guy.

Homey is probably the knowledge-haver when it comes to handguns.

Do you know what kind of grips those are?

If you're curious about value, look at gunbroker.com and see what people are selling them for.

can you switch out the cylinder?

I have a Ruger Single Six where I can switch from a .22LR cylinger to a .22 Magnum.

I have no idea. My grandfather wasn't up to speed for his last couple of years, and I had no idea he was leaving this thing to me, so I didn't get much information before my grandmother handed it to me the day after the funeral. I wouldn't know how to switch out the cylinder. I'm not a gun guy, but I am becoming one with the deaths of family members. This is my first pistol.

OK...

For now you need to get some oil, like Break-Free CLP or Hoppe's, and apply it to a dry paper towel and wipe the gun down with a light film. Now you can store it and not worry about rust.

If you're going to shoot it, you'll need a pistol cleaning kit with .22 cal patches and jags.

A note about the difference between single action and double action. It's a function of the trigger. With a single action, you have to manually c0ck the hammer. A double action will automatically c0ck itself as you pull the trigger.

Thanks, Jerk. That's what I want to know - how to preserve it. I'm not really interested in getting rid of it, but it would be nice to know the value. If it's in good enough condition to shoot - and I think it is - it may become a very good friend of mine. It is a single shot.

I'm like Jerk in that I'm more of a rifle guy but the .22 Magnum is a great round. It's 40 grain & it packs quite a punch for a small cartridge.

The standard 40 grain bullet is now advertised to have a muzzle velocity of 1,910 fps in a 22" rifle barrel and carries 324 ft. lbs. of energy. From the 6.5" barrel of a revolver the velocity is 1400 fps with an energy of 174 ft. lbs.
