I have a 2005 Chevy Cavalier I got for my wife to drive to work. We've had it maybe a year and a half, we got it used. Anyway, just today while I was driving my son to daycare and after we've been on the road about 20 minutes, when I would stop at a stop sign or light, the engine dies.

It starts right back up and drives okay. But now it seems everytime I stop the car, the engine turns off.

Anyone know why?

I had a Cavalier that used to do the same thing. If it idled too low it would die. One thing for sure is it didn't like the rain. You might try replacing the distributor cap.

I had a similar problem with an older car. It only happened after the engine had gotten fully warmed up. It would die when you stopped moving, almost like it was a standard and you forgot to push in the clutch.

It turned out to be a problem with the torque converter (I think it was called a "throw out" or "lock out" torque converter, or something like that). My mechanic unplugged that part of it. I didn't get quite as good gas mileage after that, but it fixed the problem without having to spend a bunch of money on the transmission.

I had that problem with my old Grand Prix. It turned out to be dirty injectors, and I just ran some STP cleaner through the fuel lines, and it solved it. But I wouldn't think that would be an issue yet with and 05.

And once it's warm, it won't idle at all? Or is the problem intermittent?

No it doesn't jerk, it's just dies. Could be from all this rain.
And yes the check engiene light came on last week.
