Eisenhower, NOT Turner. Ike Turner was a wife beater and a drug addict.

65 years ago, on this day in 1942, General Dwight D. Eisenhower becomes commander of all U.S. troops in the European theater of World War II, continuing the steady ascent in military rank that would culminate in his appointment as supreme Allied commander of all forces in Europe in 1943 (SHAEF). As U.S. commander, “Ike” developed diplomatic skills that he would later employ as America’s 34th president.

U.S. Army military historians Carl Vuono and M.P.W. Stone have described Eisenhower as a dynamic leader who successfully planned and oversaw very complex military strategy in a global environment. These qualities came in handy when Eisenhower was elected president in 1952. The Cold War between democratic and communist nations was in full swing and Eisenhower’s ability to form cooperative relationships, combined with his military experience and calm demeanor reassured anxious Americans. Ike was peerless as a coalition and consensus builder...a skill we could use these days I might add.

Eisenhower was born in Denison TX. Eisenhower was the third of seven sons of David Jacob and Ida Elizabeth (Stover) Eisenhower. In the spring of 1891 the Eisenhowers left Denison, Texas, and returned to Abilene, Kansas, where their forebears had settled as part of a Mennonite colony. Ike's dad David worked in a creamery.

Ike attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point from 1911 to 1915, where he cultivated friendships with future generals Omar Bradley, James A. Van Fleet and Joseph T. McNarney.

Norman Rockwell liked Ike.

After graduating from the academy, Eisenhower served in relative obscurity in the peacetime inter-war US Army in the CONUS and in Panama, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He went to the Army Command and General Staff College at Ft Leavenworth in 1928 and a year later worked as an assistant in the Secretary of War’s office. (Note: before 1947 and the Defense Re-Organization Act, we had a Navy and War Department. In 1947, the two service departments were somewhat consolidated, still as separate Department's of the Army and Navy, but joined the newly created Department of the Air Force, all under the Department of Defense. Thus, In 1929, Ike was assigned to the equivalent of the Secretary of the Army's office.)

In 1935, as a young colonel, Ike served as an assistant to General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines. This service under "The American Caesar" led MacArthur to remark during WWII when was asked what he thought of the man who had risen above his former boss in responsibility, "Ike was the best clerk I ever had."

With war with Japan seeming imminent, Eisenhower returned to the states in 1941 to become a brigadier general in the Third Army. Between February and June 1942, Eisenhower was assigned to the War Department and rose rapidly within its ranks. As the leading general of the U.S. forces in Europe, Eisenhower was directly involved with planning and executing U.S. military strategy in the fight to liberate Europe from the clutches of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.

In November 1942, Eisenhower went on to become the commander of all Allied forces in North Africa, where he led the successful invasions of Sicily and Italy and dealt with irascible British General Bernard Montgomeryand exiled French leader Charles de Gaulle.

A year later he was appointed supreme commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces and planned and led the invasion of Normandy, France, more commonly referred to as “D-Day.” Ike's military accomplishments were especially noteworthy given that at no time in his career, had he ever commanded troops in combat.

Eisenhower stayed on as a five star General of the Army until 1951, when he retired from the Army to run his successful campaign for president.

Ike won decisively, however the solid Democratic Deep South didn't vote for him

For two terms, Ike the war hero presided as the nation’s Commander in Chief during an extremely prosperous and peaceful time in our history.

From the National Archives

In a speech he gave upon leaving office in 1961, Eisenhower famously warned Americans of the growing power of what he termed the military-industrial complex, or the potential for danger that existed from the incestuous relation of the nation’s commercial and military interests. IOW, war material manufacturers tend to have a vested interest in the US being at war...and that bears watching.

Ike was succeeded by JFK, upon whose watch America became embroiled in military operations in Southeast Asia.

After Ike left the White House, he retired to his home in Gettysburg PA with his wife Mamie and played a lot of golf.
