So I am looking to buy myself a beater pickup(late 70's-early80'd here in the near future, and I would like to eventually turn the truck into a little bit of a project to hone my meckanicing. My question is out of the following motors 460,454,351,350, 305, and 302, what is the easiest to work on and upgrade?

1St make up ur mind if you want a Chevy or a fird !
Any Chev engine is the easiest , Cause all Small block parts will interchange .
Ford Not so much .

I'm comfortable with either. Ideally, I want something with a GM Big Block, mostly for sentimental reasons.

If I were to add aftermarket parts, carb, manifold, etc. What's the best brand to use? Edelbrock, Holley, etc?

Depends on what you want to achieve .

Has anyone checked on Olevet to see if he's OK. Someone might have knocked him over the head and stolen his computer.

There's just something about this post that isn't Norml.

Like Olevet said, if you want simplicity and ease of locating parts, go with the 350 Chevy. However, if you're dead set on a big block, go with the 454, but I'm warning you it's a POS.

You're much better off with a 350 with a turbo 350 transmission. You can damn near get your parts from Walmart.

i don't have any experience on the big blocks, but yeah, you can basically find 350 parts on the side of the road :D

Dean the turbo 350 is just about gone , They are hard to find and even harder to get hard parts for
If you build the 454 right its a great engine , stock , not so much

Yeah, you can tell I'm aging myself from my hotrod days.

And I'm just not a big block fan. If you want quick, go with a short block. If you want stout, go with a diesel.

Wouldn't you want to go ahead and put heads, intake, etc on it?

Diesel on the new ones, yes, but we're talking 70's trucks. It's a little easier to put in and work on a stout big block, though. Nothing wrong with a 454. They sell oil just about everywhere that you can add every thousand miles or so. No problem.

The reason I want 454 is because some of my earliest memories involve me riding around with my Grandpa in one of his trucks with 454. I have a GM parts connection through by brother in law, who also have a very nice shop with everything you could possibly want, plus a chassis dyno. So I really don't have very many restrictions on what I can accomplish.

Are you planning on making the truck a haul *** machine or do you just want an engine for nostalgia purposes?

Seems kind of a waste of cubic inches when there are better engines for gas mileage and everyday driving.

Why the hell would you keep a bobcat in the freezer?

It wouldn't be an everyday driver at all. It would be for moving **** periodically, and for me to **** around with as a hobby.
