The wrestling forum is on the OSU board.

Pintle hooks have less chance of coming apart. More secure, IMO.

I'm in a hunting group that goes to NW Colorado every year, and we first used regular trailers with ball hitches to haul our stuff it. But, the off road bumps, dips etc caused about one unhitching every other year. So, we switched to 1/4 ton military Jeep trailers with pintle hooks, and never have had one come apart from the hitch.

it does look more secure, but I would think the there would be more bumping around at take off and stopping, because it not a solid hook up?

There is more bumping, but it's just noise. At first, that bumping noise will cause consternation for someone that hasn't used that type hitch in the past.

The off road (even at very slow speed) driving over uneven roads causes twisting at the ball. A car/truck leans one way, at a different pitch that the trailer, and it can pop off. The "play" in the pintle hook's design, and closed latch keep the two vehicle units connected.

Semi's that pull double trailers use a pintle hook (for the most part), because the design is inherently more secure than a ball.

Cool, I was looking at a nice trailer but it had the pintle setup so i am going back and look at it again

We use the 14008 and the 14017 for extremely heavy equipment 100,000 lbs +

You don't need one if your just towing your boat to the lake IMO.

The best thing you can do is know what class your hitch is, know how much your pulling and know that what your using to pull with will be able to control the load as well as stop the load.

True that the 14010 and the 14016 are more secure than the regular ball hitch...

Just my 2 cents.

can you use the 14010 with a regular 2 inch hitch?

I agree. For pure street towing, using a ball is best/easiest for 99% of towing uses. It's the hunting/farm/offroad stuff that makes a pintle hook a better choice.

I don't use that combo style, but my Dad does on his Jeep. Works great, and you don't have to switch out for different syles.

The 14010 is a 2 5/16 ball. If memory serves, any tounge pull trailer over either 10k or 15k must have a pintle hitch.
Edit:You can install a 2" ball in the 14010, but you will get a lot of "slop" when towing.

Remember...

After a long tow...

Treat your ball with some nice lube.
