View Full Version : Surprised no one posted about Albertsons going buh bye in Oklahoma...

That's right...ALL THE STORES IN OKLAHOMA ARE GOING AWAY! The two in Norman that I worked at for three years before my career change last July are going to become...HOMELAND!

Say what you will about the high prices...I agree with you. But good luck finding a lot of those specialty items...the good cuts of meat...and whatnot at Homeland.

Sorry, but the two existing Homeland stores in Norman are dumps.

Those of you in other OK towns, there are about five different companies splitting up the remainder of the stores.

I'm just      that HEB didn't try to get into the fray...they are AWESOME down here and would definitely give Wal-Mart a run for their money up there.

I do love HEB, but it all depends on which HEB we're talking about. They can be really really great or they can be really really ****ty.

Take the Waco stores for example. We've got the "ghetto-HEB" which is a totally appropriate name for the place and needs no explanation. It's over by campus and it feels like you need a tetanus shot after leaving the place.

Then you've got the "Mexi-HEB" which is a step up from the ghetto-HEB and seems to be the place where all the local Mexicans patron (for whatever reason).

Finally, you have the "Taj-ma-HEB" which is a 1st class establishment all the way. The place is huge and has higher prices but it has all the specialty stuff you can't find elsewhere. It also has a truly outstanding wine selection that you never expect to see at a grocery store. The place even has its very own wine dealer.

the Albertson's in Boulder shut doors and went zero about 6 months ago. it's too bad though in Norman, Albertson's was the only place you could get fresh herbs and some other stuff. and Head Country BBQ sauce.

well, you can get Head Country at the wal-marts. but, wal-marts doesn't carry Zatarain's seasoning salt, Trappy's Red Devil, Community or Cafe du Monde Coffee, Wasa crackers, or a decent steak - which were the only reasons i ever went to albertsons.

that sucks. i feel your pain. i moved last august and the closest store is a Safeway that is a parody of food. it sucks out loud. deli meats and cheeses are crap and overpriced. bread sucks. no real selection, but still overpriced somehow.

i know about food costs, right? i know when i'm getting bent over.

There's another (higher) level to HEB. It's called "Central Market" .... Central Market HEB's are in Plano, Dallas (Lover's Lane), Fort Worth, Southlake and a couple in Austin and the original "Broadway Central Market" in San Antonio.

The crap in those stores is OUTRAGEOUSLY priced.

I think Albertson's shut down their warehouse in Katy, TX (Houston) the same time HEB ran their asses out of S. Texas. Not sure if Albertson's kept any Houston stores open and supplied them from Dallas warehouse.

HEB bought most of the land and building that Albertson's owned in San Antonio and put in their own stores.

Vaevictis
6/21/2007, 06:31 AM
Heh, if you've ever seen the HEB in downtown Tomball, you'd realize that those things can get just as ghetto as any Homeland.

And I don't think I'll miss Albertson's. Going in there looking for something is always a crap shoot. There were multiple occasions where they were out of stock on an item I needed for weeks.

Looks like I'll be shopping at Super Target a lot more now. It's no loss.

But I'd kill for a halfway decent Publix.

LilSooner

Albertson's has been pulling out of the Phoenix market for the last year or so. They've closed probably 90% of their stores, with several of them being only a couple of years old. There is a ton of grocery store competition here with three other large chains all over the place.

if you're talking about the one at 104th & penn, it was originally supposed to be a Baker's until someone ****ed off the baker's people.

and if it's going to be a homeland, it won't be one for long. wal-marts has plans for a giganta-mart at 104th and may.

the 104th and s. penn location would be perfect for a whole foods or trader joes.

Albertson's meat is pretty good, so I guess I'll miss that. Homeland really sucks though. We do most of our shopping at crest - except for the meat. Maybe we'll just buy meat at Sam's now and use farmer's market exclusively for produce (during the summer that is).

i agree, albertsons does have a good butcher shop for a chain grocery

my only "beef" with sams is that i have to buy the meat in bulk, and there's only two of us in the house so its not as handy as it is for those of you with kiddo's

tom thumb down here is a good store but its really pricey compared to all the others

Sams has the best produce imo

that's not true. Whole Foods has a Boulder store where they don't have a wine/beer section. Whole Foods has a business model where they only have stores with a % of high income per square near the store.

Sam's would lose a lot of memberships. including mine.
I have both, they do have some different products. We get some things at one the other doesn't have.

I went to a Whole Foods in Boston (Beacon Hill area) that had no alcohol at all, so they do go into markets where they can't sell beer/wine. I know they have OKC and Tulsa on their radar, a change in the liquor sales law would probably move them up the list. I was suprised when I went into a grocery store in Indianapolis last weekend (up there for the USGP last weekend) and they had full beer/wine/liquor in the grocery stores. The Whole Foods here in downtown puts any Central Market that I have seen to shame. Of course the downtown location is about twice as large as any other store and their HQ sits on top of it. The north location is about the same as the Central Market down here in South Austin.

I worked at the Skaggs Albertsons/Alpha Beta in Bethany during high school and until the OU-USC game in 1982, it is suppose to change to a Homeland. Homeland is owned by AWG, they haven't been related to Safeway since Safeway sold off chains in their bankruptcy 15-20 years ago. Homeland was run by ex-Safeway people until they couldn't compete anymore and AWG took control. They bought the Randall's/Tom Thumb chain here in Texas and still suffer compared to HEB. When my dad visited down here he wished they had HEB in OKC, much better than the options they have. They have expanded into Mexico and it would be great if they could expand into Oklahoma.
