Hot Wheels 'fire mountain' race set

hot wheels were da bomb. i must have had over 200 cars (combine that with my friends cars) and we would spend most of the summer hand drawing up double elimination brackets and determining a true national champion. ;)

I don't think I ever got any toys when I was a kid. I got 2 bicycles growing up - a Schwinn Stingray and a Schwinn 10-speed. I do remember getting a couple airplane models that were cool. Overall, my best "toys" growing up were:

1. My 03 Springfield 30-06 (a WW-I sniper rifle I got from my grandpa)

2. Leftover 2x4's and steel roller skate wheels we made skateboards out of

3. An old 55-gallon drum we used to barrell walk on, get inside of and roll down hills, and fill with water and go swimming in. We used to also get on the roof with the dog and drop her into the 55-gallon drum full of water.

4. Any old piece of cardboard we could slide down the hills on.

5. Making water balloon launchers out of old inner tubes and the dog's dish.

Radio Flyer - making fun since 1917...

I don't know how many of these we went through, but in one summer I know we trashed at least 4 of 'em & had to buy them with money we made mowing...
used to pull someone in these with a rope to a bike, and we would whip curves & hills like no tomorrow to see how bad we could flip each other out of them...we even designed some brakes on the wagon so that the person riding could try & not get slammed....

bloody knees, arms, all that good stuff, but no broken bones...good times!

Some not mentioned that I had and enjoyed

Some bombing game, where the land turned in a circle and you had this scope above the land that you looked through a scope and tried to bomb certain areas. The scope would move back and forth for adjustment.

Stretch Armstrong...thing had to have weighed 10 pounds.

Six Million Dollar Man, skin on the arm would flip up to show electronic circuitry, and you could look through his head and out his eye.

Lone Ranger and Tonto..I had the mess wagon, horses the whole nine yards.

Some 2-3 foot tall battle robots things. There were like 3 or 4 different ones, and different things would shoot from them...I think mine had missiles that shot from his arm...another one I think had missiles that shot from the chest.

Legos and hot wheels were definitely teh bomb.

giJoe's were pretty sweet as well but I used to get ****ed at how the kids on the commercials somehow had elaborate cave type bases built right in their backyard, complete with landing strips, bunkers, sinper towers, repel lines, mini trees, roads with working stoplights, convenient stores, etc.

All my lousy back yard had was grass, and the occasional pile of dogstuff.

I'm pretty sure the bombing game was "Bombs Away." I had the night-time version that you played in the dark and only had a tiny light to illuminate the targets. Hours and hours of fun.

Im thinking ours might have had a light too...

As far as the hot wheels go, we used to have a large plastic terrain thing we played on. Had roads, and houses and hills to drive the hot wheels on. We wore that thing out.

Hot Wheels > Matchbox

WRONG.

Matchbox cars had much style and coolness; HotWheels were cheap, springy-wheeled pieces of crap. As soon as the springy-wheel busted, they were just crap.

Actually, that's a bit overboard. Let put it this way: Matchbox cars were toys of imagination; HotWheels were toys of short-lived action. I liked imagination a little better, though we did set up some bitchin Hot Wheel tracks around the house.

My cousin and I had some little cowboys & Indians and a fort and a tin town that sorta looked like the Gunsmoke set. We called the whole thing "the Ranch Set" and played with that for hours at a time. That's #1, tied with Matchbox cars.

Lincoln Logs at #2 were sometimes included in the ranch set action.

Honorable mention:
Little toy soldiers (I had some great WWII GI's vs Krauts stuff. They also worked with with Lincoln Logs)
Tinker toys
