I just finished watching the first two episodes of the series. I think it's superb. Apparently, episode two isn't supposed to show until this Sunday but it was on ON Demand.
Apparently it's getting ripped by critics (the lead-in from the much-hyped The Sopranos finale didn't help) because it's a little all over the place. I think it will clear up with each coming episode - it did between the first two episodes, anyway.
It's a very character driven show with a central plot that isn't too clear. There's a lot of foreshadowing and some perfect one-liners.
The main characters are good (the guy that plays John is a riot), but the supporting cast is even better. Ed O'Neill is a batty ex-police officer, Luke Perry is a shady surfing agent, Luis Guzman is a handyman for a run-down hotel, Willie Garson is a surfer-groupie lawyer and Matt Winston (pageant host in Little Miss Sunshine) is a suicidal lottery winner.
Anyway, if you have HBO, watch the first couple episodes on ON Demand. It's a good watch.
