I just finished watching the first two episodes of the series. I think it's superb. Apparently, episode two isn't supposed to show until this Sunday but it was on ON Demand.

Apparently it's getting ripped by critics (the lead-in from the much-hyped The Sopranos finale didn't help) because it's a little all over the place. I think it will clear up with each coming episode - it did between the first two episodes, anyway.

It's a very character driven show with a central plot that isn't too clear. There's a lot of foreshadowing and some perfect one-liners.

The main characters are good (the guy that plays John is a riot), but the supporting cast is even better. Ed O'Neill is a batty ex-police officer, Luke Perry is a shady surfing agent, Luis Guzman is a handyman for a run-down hotel, Willie Garson is a surfer-groupie lawyer and Matt Winston (pageant host in Little Miss Sunshine) is a suicidal lottery winner.

Anyway, if you have HBO, watch the first couple episodes on ON Demand. It's a good watch.

I watched it Sunday and liked it so far. On demand is the stuff now.

it's hard not to be impressed with the quality of stuff HBO is putting out. in a way, they've done a masterful job of changing their "business model"--since showing pay per first run movies is pretty moribund with today's technology. it's pretty impressive.

it's a versatility you don't often see in today's media market. and, the quality and creative license you see fairly resembles the way much content was produced by the BBC--shielded from market pressures and "ratings", in which creative freedom was allowed to flourish along with good writing-in the late 70's and 80's. certainly, a luxury the standard broadcast channels cannot allow themselves.

I about fell over laughing when Guzman said that one dude/drug dealer "looks like Bowser from Sha Na Na."

Deadwood with highlights.

So far, a dude floats (twice), another dude can summon God, and a dead bird and a brain dead punk go Benny Hinn on each other. I can't wait 'til next week to see what Moses orders at Jack in the Box.

Nothing in Carnivale came together for me either. I'm digging this show. On Demand has interviews with Milch and the surfer chick that plays Kai. Tonight was strange and good. I'm hooked and I can't quite figure out why.

HBO owns my Sunday nights again until I get a DVR. I guess I could watch it On Demand, but oh well.
