is there some trick to keeping a flag mount on a brick wall?

i've got metal anchors in the drill holes and they keep pulling out - its really starting to **** me off

Just go ahead and mount it to the wooden garage door frame. They make brackets which will allow the flag staff to be at a 90 degree angle to the mounting surface. I did that in Alabamy and it worked great for three years --and a couple hurricanes.

my garage is in the back of the house

My old house was set up that way. I drilled holes through the entire wall and stuck giant lag bolts/washers all the way through. I guess you probably should do this only if it's mounted to a garage wall.

Have you got wooden columns out front to which you could mount the bracket with straps or screws?

here in Tulsey, I went with that wood plate that runs along the eave. i have to use a step ladder to put up the flag staff, but...WTF, who cares?

Get steel wool
Pack the holes super tight with steel wool
Drive in screws

Just buy an in ground flag pole. I love mine. (I love my pole?)

no, there isnt any wood on the front of the house - its all brick

steel wool huh? hmmm, might try that - the metal anchors just keep coming out with any kind of wind

i was wondering if there was some kind of masonry cement that i could put in the drill holes and cement the anchors in

If my son were deployed to Iraq, I'd have a illuminated free-standing flagpole in the front yard where I would fly Old Glory 24/7, along with his division's flag underneath...but that's just me. No pressure. ;)

heh, i'll remember that

i've considered the in ground flag pole......and i have one of those service star flags hanging in the front window

Oh yeah?

Well, if MY son were deployed to Iraq, not only would I have an illuminated free-standing flagpole in the front yard with Old Glory flying 24/7, I would hire a full marching band to wander up and down my street every hour on the hour playing a selection of Sousa marches.

So there.

I had the same problem with the flag mount in the brick thingy. I finally ended up mounting the flag on the fascia board and letting it hang at a 90 degree angle.

i dont even know where i'd mount one for a 90 degree angle, like i said, its all brick

and i'm not real crazy about that angle for a US flag mount'

the lucky bastard across the street has a HUGE tree that he has his flag mount secured too

you could plant a tree and wait for it to grow real big.

they make spread anchors for this similar to the ones for drywall. (the anchors are actually for brick or block or concrete.)

take the original bracket off, hammer the sleeve into the brick then when you screw the screw back in, the sleeve spread and holds better.

they should have these at Lowes or Home Depot. Here's an example:

thats exactly the type of anchor i have in the wall

OUAndy1807

ah, so you'll just need to redrill some new anchors.

are the screws backing out or are the anchors just not holding and spinning when you put the screw in?

Aberdeen

JK - are the anchors in the mortar or the brick? sometimes the mortar is too soft and that's why the anchors come out.

mostly in the brick, i think one of them is in the mortar, but the top 2 anchors are both in brick

and if i put thicker anchors in the brick, then i need thicker anchor bolts, which dont fit thru the holes in the mount

and more holes in the brick is NOT what i need......or want

agree - no more holes in the brick. How about drilling out the mount to allow for thicker anchor bolts?

you generally can't pull a spread anchor out once you've spread it. you can push them through, but not bring them back the other way without doing at least some damage.

you can't put bigger screws in, you can't get the right size screws to work. I don't see that you have any other choice.

how big are the holes that you're talking about?

Are they lead anchors? I'd just try some bigger screws & anchors to fit the holes you've drilled. Or maybe try the steel wool trick around the anchors. Wooden matches or wood slivvers might also do the trick. This sounds like the sort of problems I have with these endeavors - which is not a compliment to your engineering skills. :O :D

well, color me confused. I though the anchor coming out was the initial problem.

I thought it was the screw backing out of the anchor. if it's just the anchor coming out, get a bigger anchor.

try some epoxy.

Aberdeen

rub some dirt on it.

jk the sooner fan

bigger anchors mean bigger screws which wont fit thru the holes in the mount

epoxy is sort of what i was thinking - is there a specific kind for brick?

Anyway you could attach a decorative piece wood to the brick, then attach the mount to it?

OUDoc

Or mount a full size flag pole on the roof of your house. You be the most patriotic SOB on the block. ;)

well no offense baja, but if i could attach a piece of wood to the brick, i could attach the flag mount!
