Fighting Lessons for the Legislature by John Marc Green
MONTGOMERY (AP) - Senator Charles Bishop's right hook to Senator Lowell Barron's jaw on the floor of the Alabama Legislature never turned into the kind of epic government brawl you see in Taiwan...where participants often need medical attention.
Still, a local mixed martial arts expert says the video clip shows potential.
"I think that's your hard tax dollars at work right there, some of that money should have been spent on some boxing lessons," said Chris Conolley.
Conolley teaches amateur and professional fighters how it's done on a daily basis. And he's no slouch in the cage, mixing it up with a flurry of blows in this recent match.
Based on his professional background, Conolley says he likes what he saw on the senate floor as he watched the video clip of the incident.
"Right in the jaw...perfect placement, very well, need to turn his hips into that one a little bit there, bam...cocked it, a little telegraphing, it's pretty bad, the left hand's down, if old boy had thrown a counter right there, he'd have got knocked out."
Conolley has some advice for Senator Bishop, who admits he'd do it again under similar circumstances.
"Little bit tighter, his defense, keep that left hand up when he throws the right hand, and throw your punches in bunches, you know, combinations instead of just one at a time."
Conolley says with a little training, the senators could settle their differences in the ring.
"You could probably put it together you know, do a little local pay per view job, get em together, there's some promoters that would hop all over that, give the money to charity, we should do that."
