"It doesn't make economic sense, it doesn't make political sense, it doesn't make historical sense. Other than that, it's a good idea," said Paul Gillies, a lawyer and Vermont historian.

Vermont ought to have a right to leave the Union if they so wish. If the citizens of the state determine that continuing their association with these United States no longer serves their best interests then they should have the right to freely leave that compact which they freely entered into in the first place. That goes for Vermont and any other state. I'm just glad to see the citizens of Vermont being proactive in proclaiming that power which they inherently reserve.

Can the other states decide to just oust Vermont from the Union?

You know...maybe keep them out for 10 years or so...

We could put up a fence to keep them inside their Country...if any of them want to then leave Vermont the Head of the Household could go back to Vermont and apply for Citizenship and re-enter after all the others who have applied for citizenship learn English and pay their fines....

now, this also where for strategic reasons "democracy" and "constitutional republic" get used as inter-changeable.....see Bush's statement about Russia....it's always for strategic reasons. see the "Republic" argument used whenever "civil liberties" are at stake.

Two things:

1. When Fox News latches on to this, people will listen up. 'Coz we all know Fox News is into Subliminal Mind Control with those hot babes on "Fox and Friends" and Bill O'Reilly yelling and spitting at people. They've also invented a little known device that will freeze lock the nobs on people's TV sets. The channel can not be changed.

2. Throw out Wal-Mart from Vermont and all will be OK.

Reminds me of an editorial some years back in the Tulsa World, discussing the pros and cons of Tulsa (and NE Oklahoma) seceding from Oklahoma nad joining up with Kansas. Thought the intent was not serious, it was to point out that Tulsa, historically at least, has been very different politically and socially from most of Oklahoma. I'll try to find it, but it was an interesting read.

Western Nebraska periodically does the same thing with the concept of Wyobraska because they feel that the eastern part of the state is too dominant.

southern Colorado versus the Denver/Boulder 1-70 corridor as well. it's impossible, but think about this:

in the 1992 Dem Primary Jerry Brown won the state of Colorado by visiting Denver, Boulder, and Aspen in a 4 day period.

How about sparing me the bull**** Bri? Read what the hell it is that I wrote. Nobody said everyone in Vermont wants to leave the Union; I certainly didn't. That the federal government owns approximately 90% of the land up here, yet refuses to spend adequate funds on infrastructure (which is one of the things that Ted Stevens has used so successfully in getting federal dollars up here.)

That we're not allowed to sell our oil to the highest bidder (though I believe that's been repealed.)

That they're one of those crazy-assed "Sovereign Citizen" people.

That the feds won't allow you to smoke weed.

That the feds won't respect a right to privacy guaranteed in our state constitution.

Taxes.

Your usual grab-bag of crazy right and left stuff along with a small leavening of not-so-crazy right and left stuff that gets overblown.

Me, I think that being part of the Union is a large net positive.

Well, yeah, that goes without saying.

The Canadians right next door were clamoring pretty hard to join the Union up until a few years ago, in fact. For all I know, they still are. They're pretty irritated about the fact that a bunch of their natural resource wealth gets sent to Quebec and the Maritimes.
