The air force is apparently going for an average height of 5'8. This amuses me greatly.

Sincerely,

The guy who stood in the sun as long as the newest class of airmen and was nowhere near passing out.

where did you hear this?

As an aside, short, stocky guys are the most G tolerant.

I've been trying to figure out why this amuses you greatly, but I can't.

5'8" as the average?

that means there are some pretty short dudes...

The average height of men in the U.S. is a little over 5'9".

Other than my 20/550 vision, looks like I missed my calling. :(

Are you sure? I was thinking it was closer to 5'8". I guess I should do a GIS.

I'm sure we could all use an extra inch.

No, you were right. According to gainheight.com, the average American man is 5' 9.1" and the average American woman is 5' 3.7".

I'm more surprised at the woman's average height. Seems a little low.

Visual evidence of standing out there while my daughter went officially from trainee to airman. There were dudes who were probably shorter than 5'4" out there. I think maybe two groups out of the 500+ new airmen had anyone near 6' tall.

Harry, it amuses me as a man who is 6'6" tall :)

As a midget, it doesn't amuse me. ;)

I was just wondering, because that's like the national average. Hispanics are even shorter on average than Caucasians and African-Americans, so the national average will probably start going down with the hyper rate of growth of that segment of our population now.

well I was guesstimating the average height there. I think there were definitely more males there that 5'8 would have been a stretch for than were at that height or higher. One of the unit flag bearers was lucky to be 5'4, and he wasn't hispanic at all.
