Texas officials looking into defensive end's arrest

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas junior defensive end Henry Melton was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated early Friday.

Melton was pulled over in the popular Sixth Street entertainment district about 2:30 a.m. after officers noticed his truck driving in an unsafe manner, Austin police spokeswoman Laura Albrecht said.

Melton was charged with DWI and taken to the Travis County Jail. He was released at 8:15 a.m. after posting a $1,500 personal recognizance bond, according to jail records.

Texas athletic spokesman John Bianco said school officials were aware of the arrest and were looking into it.

Melton was a backup running back his first two seasons with the Longhorns before moving to defensive end this spring. He rushed for 432 yards and scored 10 touchdowns as the Longhorns' short-yardage specialist in 2005 when Texas won the national championship.

His role was more limited in 2006 when he rushed for 193 yards and six touchdowns.

Melton, 6 feet 3 and 270 pounds, is expected to compete for playing time next season at defensive end with the departure of last season's starters Brian Robison and Tim Crowder.

How much does a 6'3", 270 lb man have to drink before he feels the effects?

I think the only way for that to happen is that boosters bought him some suspicious things...weekly ;)

Melton has a time machine that allowed him to go back two years to when that scumbag McRae was the manager?

A DUI and a DWI are both bad, don't get me wrong... neither is good. But there is a difference between a guy who has a can in his car, is laughing like he's drunk (DUI) and a guy who is wasted. Like people said earlier, he's a big guy, and if he was feeling it, he had way too much to drink. Again, not saying that drinking and driving is conditional, but this is a cut-and-dry situation and I'm glad the law made him pay for it. Now the question is, will :mack: do anything about it? I seem to remember OUr players getting suspended for small stuff like curfew and arguments (*COUGH* KEJUAN JONES).

Maybe not game suspension, but make the guy do some serious (VOLUNTEER) comunity service time, or have him go to meetings or something. I would expect just the same from OUr coaching staff.

College kids. It's stupid, but it happens everywhere.

True... but if nothing is done about it... then you end up with primadonnas who continue to feel they are above the rules. College is about learning and experience. If you punish them, they gain experience and learn what NOT to do. A lot of coaches let stuff slide, and then it's a shcok to the team's fan base when someone like Ricky Williams is too Chonged out to play in the NFL. Or they can't believe that good ol' Mike Vick would ever do such a bad thing.

Paul Thompson got into some early troubles at OU and look at the guy he is now. You think that comes from getting a petty slap on the wrist? Bomar will learn too, if he hasn't already.

Punishment is a part of growing up. You make your bed, you sleep in it.

Just my $.02

You people act like it will matter. The most they'll do in Austin when they decide to have a court date, is inform him that the jail is full so he'll have to come back another lifetime to serve time. :D

He already has a game suspension, of sorts. He is running fourth at his new position of Defensive End.

I think it's something that Mack Brown will work out. This sort of thing happens at OU too. I don't think it's a big deal.

In this special case, the player is the "4th string" player who (under the strategic eyes of Mack Brown) will never made the team.

Therefore, one shot kill million birds, Mack will make sure to bring it out to public. Mack plan out to kick this player bu..tt, talk about it on TV and News papers, notice NCAA that Texass following the rules harshly.

That is already on the table at Mack's home office, the one costed 2 mil built near Lake Travis of nu.des.
