I guess I need to check that the outlet is still providing power but is there anything else I could check before taking it to get fixed?

I checked the breakers and none of them are tripped. The dryer is a Whirlpool Duet.

Any advice, suggetions?

Anything else on that side of the house not working? There are sometimes circuit breakers on electrical outlets that can trip and shut off power to entire circuits.

We have one on an outlet in the downstairs bathroom that sometimes trips and shuts off several outlets upstairs.

It was working fine then it died. It won't turn on. I had dried one load and the second was in the dryer for about 10 minutes.

But you'd have to be the one making the advances. It's the rules.

The one that delivers the 'sausage' pizza?

Dammit, I didn't phrase that in the form of a question.

It's 'lectric. I bought a volt meter thingy and there does not appear to be any juice in the wall.

I have an electrician coming out.

This owning a house sucks, today.

Hold up.

It's gonna be 220. Check your panel for a 40 amp dual. If that ain't there, check outside by your meter. Sometimes your 220 is on a cartridge or breaker outside the house. Worth a look before you sink a buttload on an electrician.

I was JUST going to say that.

The dual breakers for the dryer were not tripped but I fliped it anyway to see if that was the case. Those breakers felt 'lighter' than the others I fliped.

You flipped it off then back on and it still don't work?

Poke it with a stick.

A metal stick.

The only breaker box outside was near the AC and had two 30A breakers in it. I tripped them and still nothing.

The house is almost 80 years old and the clown I bought it from appears to have done a lot of work himself. If I find too many more things like this I may put your counterparts in Ardmore to work late one night.

Yep, off then back on. Nadda.

Pat, should I fill the tub up with water and stand in the tub when I poke it with a metal stick?

You may need to replace the breaker. $8 at Home Depot...you can do it yourself.

My A/C unit outside was not working last summer and it was a faulty breaker.

I don't **** with 'lectricity. I appreciate the advice but I'd get a loan at one of those loan shark places if I had to to pay an electrician. I did rewire an outlet that was wired wrong, reverse polarity, but I'm not dicking with 220, especially not going to get behind the panel. I saw what happens when an electrician's wrench gets too close to a hot 480 wire.

It sounds like a short to me. Look on the bright side. Its better to discover that you have some kind of an electrical problem this way instead of by a house fire. Because the previous owner jimmy rigged things, I would have the electrician check out the rest of the wiring since he or she will be there anyway.

Tulsa_Fireman

Quick heads up, 1TC.

The way I understand it, if you have an electrician come in to do work on the house and the house isn't up to code, your house will no longer be grandfathered under the adopted local code. Therefore a reputable electrician will review the work needing done on the home, assess what it would take to bring the home back up to code, then shoot you what the overall cost will be. And again, the way I understand it, it's an all or nothing proposition. Either you get it all done or you get zip.

This is the issue I ran into with my place. Built in '75, it's all done in aluminum. I wanted to put in a bigger panel and cut in some outlets in the garage. And no one would touch it without doing a full rewire because under current NEC, aluminum is no bueno. If you do it yourself without a permit, you may not pass an EMP inspection when you sell, but it'll save you the cash of a licensed electrician having to get your place back up and square with the current NEC.

thanks. This is going to be fun. Do you think Mr. Goins will be mad if my house that he insures, burns down? ;)

I have an old washer and dryer that won't fit into the space in this house, a 30A RV plug near my garage and about 80' of 30A extension cord that I could use to dry my clothes in the garage to get me by in the meantime.

I had to have my wiring totally redone into a much bigger break box because the butcher who owned the house before me did a lot of electrical work, among other mistakes, himself. According to the electricians, the ceiling fan he put in was a fire waiting to happen. To be on the safe side, its best to have it all checked out properly. :)

Howzit was right on about a bad breaker. They fixed that and an electrocution waiting to happen in the back yard. There was some interior grade romex running from a sodium lamp down a post, stapled to the fence, strung out at waist height for about 10 feet to a duplex outlet on a wooden post. I had them disconnect both.

I have no idea what this cost me, they are going to send me a bill. They are going to come back later to fix some other 80 year old house issues.

The dryer is working very good again.
