Oklahoma to honor native son Toby Keith

The Associated Press- Toby Keith is among eight people, including the new majority owner of an NBA franchise and a civil rights pioneer, chosen to be inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame.

The hall was established in 1928 and has 613 members.

Keith, who was born in Clinton, Okla., and now lives in Norman, has performed 22 No. 1 country hits, including his debut single, “Should’ve Been A Cowboy.” He has sold 30 million CDs.

Oklahoma City businessman Clay Bennett led a group of investors to purchase the NBA’s Seattle SuperSonics last year. Also in the class are civil rights activist Clara Luper, a Hoffman native, and Muskogee native Linda K. Twine, a renowned conductor, composer and music educator.

Luper coordinated one of the nation’s early publicized sit-ins at a drugstore lunch counter in Oklahoma City.

Twine’s Broadway credits include “The Color Purple,” “Caroline, or Change,” “A Year with Frog and Toad,” “Jelly’s Last Jam,” “Big River,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “The Wiz.”

The induction banquet will be Nov. 8 in Oklahoma City.

He's a cool guy, I guess. Never really got into country, though.

I just find it funny that OSU fans claim to hate Sooner Fans with a passion, yet they play "Should've Been a Cowboy" at every sporting event.

One of my brothers was taught by Mrs. Luper. She may have won awards, but he did not like her class. At all.

Although I went to one of the high schools Mrs. Luper taught at (John Marshall), I didn't have her as one of my teachers. I did hear that a lot of people didn't particularly enjoy her class. Also, from reading 'The Undefeated', I got the impression that some people from back in the Civil Rights Movement era weren't all that fond of her.

Toby Keith, love him or hate him, is one who does things his way. I like most, but not all, of his music, and respect his independence.

I am glad to see him get this recognition.

Ha! Oklahoma, you kill me.

Two of the inductees are Clay Bennett and Aubrey McClendon, who are co-owners of the Sonics/Storm. Granted, they're successful in their own right, but how convenient that they're getting inducted THIS year.

I can't understand why Toby gets such a bad rap.

I say good for him.

Toby is a nice guy; very hospitable, however, I cant understand why he always gets a sideline pass and I don't. :D
