View Full Version : I have decided to try and get into Comic book movies

I have never really gotten into comic books or their movies. The only comic book movies I have ever watched are the original Batman movie, Superman Returns and V for Vendetta. However, most the folk I hang out with are comic book lovin' folk, so I figured I would explore it more. To that end I am going to watch Batman Begins, The Fantastic Four, and Hellboy today. I'll let you know how it goes.

I was really hoping you'd do this.

Batman Begins=Greatness
Fantastic Four=Horribleness
Hellboy=Horribleness' baby.

So far I wish Batman Begins would have included Bruce Wayne talking about Huey Lewis and the News, Genesis, and then ordering in some hookers. I think that would make a good movie better.

Heh. Yes. Yes it would have.

In fact, out comes the American Psycho BD. Haven't managed to watch it in HD yet.

The Marvel folks are re-trying to make a new Hulk movie. Different storyline and actors. Here is some info... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800080/
(This one will be completely seperate film from the suckage that came out a few years ago)

The cast looks better this time around. Maybe this time it wont suck.

Plus you can find out alot of info on comic book movies here (http://www.superherohype.com/).

Yeah, that new Hulk seems like a good idea.

Cilian Murphy is really creeping me out.

The whole movie is well cast, except for I've never been much of a Katie Holmes fan.

You will be in the last scene.

Batman Begins was great, and now it's on to the Fantastic Four.

Frozen Sooner
5/28/2007, 04:41 PM
Yeah, you're going to be REALLY disappointed with this movie.

Hell, I thought casting Christian Troy as Victor Von Doom was inspired, but the guy just absolutely flubbed it.

As long as you don't have any expectations for FF, then it won't be too bad

As long as you don't have any expectations for FF, then it won't be too bad

Expectations like:

Coherent plot
Good acting from actors that are capable of it (Michael Chiklis, I'm looking at you...)
An actual understanding of the dynamic of the comic (though they did a good job with the Ben Grimm/Johnny Storm relationship)
Seeing Jessica Alba nekkid.

royalfan5
5/28/2007, 04:47 PM
I'm not particularly impressed so far.

Well see....there you go expecting something.

BTW....I just finished the first two TPBs for 100 Bullets. I'm wondering why it took me so long to give in and check this out. Royalfan....go read these instead of watching Hellboy.

Man, you haven't even STARTED on 100 Bullets. Prepare to have your mind blown.

I buy this in trades only because there's no way I can keep all the crap going on straight in singles.

Yep, the owner of my LCS said I should take notes as read them. I am thinking of re-reading and taking those notes.

Hey, just so you know:

I'm watching Batman Begins in glorious 1080p resolution with lossless 5.1 Dolby TrueHD sound right now.

And it's GLORIOUS!

Frozen Sooner
5/28/2007, 05:03 PM
I haven't. I've cut my pull list WAY down. For some reason, nothing in comics is really grabbing my interest enough to spend big bucks anymore. Anymore, I think I'm just sticking with my Marvels plus one or two Wildstorm/Vertigo books.

V was a good movie....but a liberal mantra in disguise.

I also hear Iron Man will be out in '08.

Yep, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man in 08.

I don't see that one being any better than FF.

1. You don't seem to know what a mantra is.
2. It wasn't really all that disguised. However, I would think even a hardcore conservative would prefer liberalism to fascism.

Frozen Sooner

Yep, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man in 08.

I do. Robert Downey was a great casting choice and the images I've seen of the various armors look sweeeeeeeet.

Alan Moore did hate Thatcher and Reagan......

Alan Moore did hate Thatcher and Reagan......
He did, but his original work wasn't about liberalism vs. conservatism. It was about anarchy vs. totalitarianism. Moore thinks that liberalism vs. conservatism is a false dichotomy.

Moore is also a fruitbat.

However, in his defense, at the time he wrote V (especially the part about the lesbians) he had every reason to be a bit leery of Iron Meg's views on homosexuality. She said some pretty scary stuff.

After I finish these movies, which ones should I get next. I am thinking X-Men, but I am open to suggestion. I should mention that I have always hated Spider-Man, and I am not looking to change that. I feel that Spiderman is the K-State of superheros.

reevie

The Spider-Man movies are awesome.

I thought X-Men was ok. It's better than FF.

I haven't seen, but heard that Road to Perdition and A History of Violence is good.

Well, except that he's actually a traditional power with a loyal fanbase.

X-Men 1 and 2 are good. 3 is pretty blech.

Try History of Violence or Men in Black. Both comic book movies. Both good.

And you'll want to watch something good after FF and Hellboy. So stay away from Constantine, Catwoman and League of Extrodainary Gentlemen.

Better yet, go read Preacher.

Men in Black was a comic book? No ****. I have seen and enjoyed Men in Black then as well. History of Violence is the one with Viggo Mortensen, and Maria Bello right?

I'm as giddy as a Japanese schoolgirl meeting Rivers Cuomo over the fact that HBO has optioned Preacher as a series. Can you imagine how flippin' kick *** that will be?

Blade is also a comic book.

Of course I might just start watching the even Number Star Trek movies again. Even though the TMP rules in it's own weird slow moving way.

We call that "Wednesday" around here.

I actually forgot that part. I need to reread the series.

Ooo-RoyalFan, go pick up Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis. THAT'S some good reading in an election year.

royalfan5
5/28/2007, 05:35 PM
I hope the Royals/O's game goes better than the Fantastic Four, but I have pretty low expectations for a game that features Scott Elarton and Steve Traschel as the starting pitchers.

reevie
5/28/2007, 05:37 PM
keep this in mind about FF. They had to re-shoot the ending after initial screenings. And then ask yourself, that's the best they came up with?

Oh yeah. Excellent choice. Much better than bringing up Daredevil or Elecktra.

royalfan5
5/28/2007, 08:55 PM
So Elarton got rocked, but I bought some cookies at Wal-Mart and it's time for Hellboy. I will probably be disappointed since Pan's Labyrinth inflated my expectations of the director and of Doug Jones.

Spiderman is the OU of superheroes. A new kid on the block compared to Superman and Batman, but has a definite claim as the best ever.

Any Judge Dredd readers out there? The movie sucked. Dystopian comics always were a good read, and this British comic is no different.

A long time ago, (a very long time ago) as a kid, I collected comics and had the original editions of Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, etc. that had just come out. I had a pile of them about a foot tall: used to re-arrange them in order of favorites every month or so.

Fast forward to the present: Out of curiosity, I stopped into a shop that sells games, comics, etc., and asked the proprietor how much an original Superman in mint condition would be worth.

He said, "Probably in the neighborhood of $1,000,000."

Color me ****ed.
