Hey, thanks guys! Really, things weren't quite as smooth as I told RacerX (or told him to tell you). When Sebastian came out, his color was "on the edge" of being right. When he got to the nursery about 10 minutes later (crying like everything), the checked his blood oxygen level and it was really low. So they put him under an oxygen hood. To get it up to 100%, they had to set the oxygen level to 70%. which is a lot. His pediatrician was in the nursery when he came in so she was right there and told me she thought it was best that he go into the ICU because she didn't want him to have any damage from not enough oxygen. We really lucked out that she happened to be there right at that time. So they put him in the NICU.

So we had to wait for him to get "settled in". Sometime in the middle of that time the NICU doctor came in and told us there could be two possible things wrong with him. The first is his lungs might not have absorbed the amniotic fluid like they are supposed to and he needed to clear it out, which means he could be ready to go with us by Monday. The second would be he isn't producing this fluid (starts with an S?) that keeps his lungs moist and keeps the chambers in there from collapsing. In this case, he would be in there for a week (worst case).

After about 3 hours of "settling him in", I finally got to see him again. His color was just not right and he was really having to work to breath. by 5:30pm, Mrs. Norm was allowed to visit him for the first time - for 10 minutes. It was her second time walking after the c-section and they wouldn't allow any more time.

By that time, his oxygen had been reduced to 40% (while keeping his blood oxygen level at 100%). When I came back from dinner about 8:00pm they had reduced it to 25%. This morning about 9am they pulled the hood off him and his O2 is fine.

Now they are working on weaning him off the IV. He got his first meal of his life about 3 today (15ml). Every 6 hours they increase his meal by 10ml and decrease the amount of IV fluids until he gets to 55ml sometime tomorrow afternoon. I believe soon after that time he will go into the room with Mrs. Norm and I, then we get to take him home on Monday. It's NOT going to be a problem. He was 8lb 12oz and he was 2 weeks early, so he's a bit of a chunk and he doesn't mind drinking all we give him.

Honestly, there is no doubt in my mind that at 5:30pm last (friday) night he was 100% fine. It's good that they are taking their time though because there are plenty of babies that get worse not better. I don't want any chances taken.

So Mrs. Norm, The Boy and I got to hold him for a bit today. We were really happy. Then (after they removed one of the IVs from his belly button) they put an IV in his foot. Like everyone in his family, his veins are hiders and they had a hell of a time getting it in. So again we can't hold him because they don't want to have to put him through putting another one in if it falls out. Then there is the probability that they leave it in even if they stop the IV drip so they can give him meds, so we still won't get to hold him. I think the doctor won't keep the IV in though.

Mrs. Norm is OK. Her hemoglobin is 7.9, which is low but the level is going up so they aren't very concerned. She is hurting a bit but not 10% as much as during her pregnancy. She's doing great and she's been really patient. She is walking around pretty good, but the trip back from the NICU to the room is uphill so I have to wheel her up so she doesn't strain herself.

Norman Regional has been phenomenal. All of the nurses have been great and so has the NICU doctor. I'm really glad they are so on the ball. The nurses from the nursery keep seeing me and asking how Sebastian is doing. They are all quite supportive.

The Boy is going to be a great big brother. He wants to visit him as much as he can. He cried because he didn't get to hold him (well, he sort of did - he sat on my lap while I was holding the baby). He's totally impressed with Sebastian can't wait to read to him and teach him things.

So anyway, Sebastian is an awesome baby. He is definitely strong enough to break Mrs. Norm's ribs. He's only been crying when he's hungry, so he's not crying hardly at all now. He's not spitting his food up, he's burping, he's pooping, he's peeing - he's doing everything 100% like he's supposed to. I think he's going to be easy. And he looks just like me, so he's quite handsome.

Well, I gotta go to bed because I'm exhausted. I'll try to give an update when I can, but it probably won't be until Monday. Thanks for all the well wishes. I'll post a pic or 10 when the camera finds it's way back home.

Glad all is well.

I figured there would be a Norm story how on the way to the hospital Norm stops at Best Buy to get a new digital camera and while there realizes he needs gas and stops at Wal-Mart Realizing he need something from Wal-Mart he leaves Mrs. Norm in the car while it is filling up and runs into Wally World. While Mrs. Norm is in the car going into labor Norm is fighting with a Wal-Mart clerk and the baby is delivered by the kid working at the Wal-Mart gas station. Or something like that.

I guess he is. I sort of think of him as a kitten still. I bought a new litter box for him this weekend. I got the littermaid because I'm too lazy to clean up after him every single day. Anyway, I had to get the bigger more expensive one because the small one he destroys within a couple of months because of his ... output. He barely fits in the little one anyway.
