I bet it was .50AE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.50_Action_Express) and most certainly not .50BMG (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.50_BMG), although I wouldn't mind having the BMG to hunt something like this, it would be impractical in a pistol platform.
