Were ties a good thing or a bad thing?
Notre Dame played for the tie against Michigan State. NDame did that to secure the outright national title.
Alabama and USC shared the title in 1978 (USC beat Bama at Bama) and in 1979 both went undefeated yet USC tied Stanford and that was the deciding factor in Bama winning it all in the end.
Michigan went 9-0-3 in 1992.
1983:
Auburn lost 1 game and it was to Texas. They did beat Florida and Georgia.
Texas lost 1 game and it was in the Cotton Bowl to Georgia by 1 point.
Miami lost 1 game and it was 1st game of their season to Florida.
Nebraska lost 1 game on a failed 2pc to Miami in the Orange Bowl.
My guess is, had the Orange Bowl ended in a tie, then Nebraska could have ended up as National Champion based on the 650+ points they scored that season. Auburn would have also had a case despite the loss to Texas.
Georgia Tech tied North Carolina and Colorado tied Tennessee in 1990; both were National Champions.
Throughout cfb history leading up to 1995, were ties more of a bad thing than a good thing or the other way around?
