Were ties a good thing or a bad thing?

Notre Dame played for the tie against Michigan State. NDame did that to secure the outright national title.

Alabama and USC shared the title in 1978 (USC beat Bama at Bama) and in 1979 both went undefeated yet USC tied Stanford and that was the deciding factor in Bama winning it all in the end.

Michigan went 9-0-3 in 1992.

1983:
Auburn lost 1 game and it was to Texas. They did beat Florida and Georgia.
Texas lost 1 game and it was in the Cotton Bowl to Georgia by 1 point.
Miami lost 1 game and it was 1st game of their season to Florida.
Nebraska lost 1 game on a failed 2pc to Miami in the Orange Bowl.

My guess is, had the Orange Bowl ended in a tie, then Nebraska could have ended up as National Champion based on the 650+ points they scored that season. Auburn would have also had a case despite the loss to Texas.

Georgia Tech tied North Carolina and Colorado tied Tennessee in 1990; both were National Champions.

Throughout cfb history leading up to 1995, were ties more of a bad thing than a good thing or the other way around?

In this politically correct world, it's really the only fair option.

Ties aren't always bad (24-24 vs. Alabama in that great 1970 Bluebonnet Bowl), but they often suck royally (1984 vs. Texass..... )

Sometimes neither time deserves to win, and tie allows for that. I would like for Colorado and K-State to tie so neither fan base is happy. Demanding there be a winner is PC.

I disagree, because then there is also a loser. Tie=no losers.

Any of you stat geeks know which teams were the last teams to end a game in a tie score? and on what date?

it also means no winners. I challenge you to find any school in Texas that deserves to be winners.

Alright. We'll agree to disagree and call it a draw. :)

In the mid 60's (1965?) pokie state opened the season at home vs Air Force. Game ended in a tie 0-0. The coach of the pokies, in his post game interview said, (I am not making this up) "It looks obvious to me that we need some work on defense."

1982
Penn State gets its first national title while going 11-1 which included wins over 1 loss teams Nebraska and Georgia.

Southern Methodist finishes #2 in the AP while going 11-0-1; the only unbeaten team that season.

I'm not sure what's more embarassing, accepting a tie to Boise State after that Hook-and-Lateral, or accepting a tie to Baylor on OUr home field (basically, the opponent does a good jorb, and we look like an *** in the end). Both games I much prefer what happened and to just move on with it.

Unless you're playing OSU, then it goes without saying. :D
