it's from this Dennis Dodd article:

" College football's five best recruiters sponsored by headhunters.com

John Blake, North Carolina: A couple of years ago, Blake was largely credited with landing a top three class at Nebraska. The Huskers won the Big 12 North last year. Coincidence? Butch Davis made Blake one of his first hires. "

yawn.

from the same article:

Bob Stoops: Last year's job was one of the best this decade by any coach. It was largely forgotten after the Boise State loss, but Stoops recovered from the Big Red Imports scandal to win the Big 12. That after losing his starting quarterback and tailback. There's nothing in his playbook to account for that. Oh, and Oklahoma did come back from 18 down to lead Boise in the final minute of the Fiesta Bowl.

and

Joe Castiglione, Oklahoma: This soccer dad, grad-student-at-night is known for being one of the guys. But when things got serious, he took on the football search himself and came up with Florida's defensive coordinator. Brilliant.

Blake pulls the race card and promises mommas that he won't yell at their kids. It hooks some of them, but look at his supposed big coup from a few year ago in Dillard and Roark. They've done nothing to speak of to date, and neither would have made it through OU's S&C program. How far down the depth chart would Dillard be with our linebackers right now?

Blakes a good enough guy, but his act wears thin in a short amount of time. He was given the world here at OU, and rather than working hard and making it happen, he played video games with the kids and then had to have a mat on the sidelines so our PAT teams could line up without getting a delay of game penalty.

Look at the NFL talent the husker D-line had with Solich carryovers like Carriker, and look at how they underachieved with his coaching. NU is better offwithout the guy.

Five best game day coaches sponsored by Depends

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Jim Grobe, Wake Forest: Proved himself the best in the country, at least last season, after losing his starting quarterback, tailback and an offensive lineman in the first month. Grobe then went out and won the ACC. His combination of sweeps, end-arounds and misdirection plays kept defenses off balance enough. The Deacons are next to impossible to prepare for in a week.

Urban Meyer (Getty Images)
Urban Meyer: Second year, SEC and national championship. Maybe the first head coach to develop a "scoring coach" in the face of quality SEC defenses. "(The SEC) is like the NFL. How many NFL teams line up, hand the ball off and methodically move down the field? ... I've never seen that happen. Instead of sitting there figuring out how to run the zone play, (offensive coordinator) Dan Mullen and I sit there and say, 'How do we score?' ... Other places I've been it's never been that extreme," he said.

Nick Saban: He's back, and he's about to outsmart the world. Again. At LSU, his defenses showed three, four or five different looks before the snap. He made the quarterback guess who was coming after him. This will be a great year to watch Saban at his best. Alabama won't win the conference but will make waves. Make sure to watch 'Bama's swing games against Florida State, Tennessee, LSU and Auburn.

Jim Tressel: Kills you with kindness, then just kills you. The Sweater Vest can play in any way you want -- ball control, up-and-down, high-scoring or conservative. Ohio State defenses always seem to be great. And, yes Florida fan, I remember the BCS title game.

Perhaps I missed the joke or if there is one, but each category is sponsored by some product.

I agree but he can still recruit, thank goodness they still have Callahan.

To suggest that Dillard or Roark would not have made it through OU's S&C program is preposterous. Dillard blew out his knee last year in 2 a days, lost for the season. Roark has switched from offense to defense and NU had solid depth at that position last year. Roark should see the field quite a bit this year, as will Dillard. It's funny how only OU has a "tough" S&C program. Did you forget the S&C program was invented at Nebraska?
While we all know Blakie is a fantastic recruiter, his coaching skills leave much to be desired. NU replaced him with a very solid DL coach named Buddy Wyatt, who came to NU from Alabama. He to, is an excellent recruiter.

Of course... how do you think Stoops managed to win the 2000 NC? lol :D

Too bad the guy can't coach his way out of an empty Big Mac wrapper.

Hooray, another worthless John Blake post so that those who liked his recruiting can defend him and those who didn't can bash him.

Wee, look how smart we are. We recycle subjects nine years after Blake is gone.

Post: Blake was a good recruiter
Post: No, he wasn't.
Post: Blake is a good recruiter
Post: No, he isn't, he's a terrible coach

Jerk offs. Talk about something else.

How about this - start another thread about Les Miles or Chris Simms or Cotton Bowl seating or some other worn out topic. Why not revisit the Oregon game? Or, hey, why not start the 1,000,001st Jared Zabransy bash thread? Or, how about another Adrian Peterson Collarbone/Draft Conspiracy thread?

They're just all so interesting. Each time one of these threads is started, tons of new information just flows and flows.

Note how now that Blake is gone the nebbish fans no longer claim he recruiting all 85 scholarship players on the OU 2000 NC team, and replace it instead with realistic appraisals of his skill.

I concur. Even though John Blake cared more about playing Nintendo than he did coaching his team in his short stint as HC at Oklahoma, you have to give it up to his recruiting credentials.

I was more than happy to see him out of the Big XII.
