He was at our back door as I let slickdog out, and he lunged at us, so he met the hoe.

So what was he ???

Rat snake or desert kingsnake, I'm not sure which variety.

Did you do that with one strike of the hoe? If so, I'm impressed. Looks to be a bullsnake to me.

I struck him with great vengence and furious anger. The thought of the
sucker hitting my bare foot was not fun. I thought the .45 with hydroshocks would be a little much for this.

that was a non poisonous snake...he ate mice and rats.

Maybe he was. I live on a simple policy with snakes - you stay away from me, I stay away from you. He lunged, he died. The thought that it could have easily been slickdaughter frightens me.

It kinda looks like a diamond backed water snake, which I guess would make sense, as we have a small lake behind the house.

If he's a kingsnake, then you've killed the non-poisonous snake that eats the poisonous ones, as well as the vermin.

Jerk
5/21/2007, 10:28 PM
That's not a diamondback watersnake. They're more of a dark greenish and their pattern is different.

A blotched water snake kinda looks like that, but is more brownish in color.

That would be a Prarie King Snake. Very helpful creatures as they tend to keep mice and other vermin down. Shame you had to kill it, but, I understand the trepidation. I had one in my house here and picked it up with some tongs and took it out in the country to set it free.

Well, I don't like killing critters at all, and I don't know why a rat snake would lunge at a honkey.

I usually do the catch and release for 99% of critters, including the raccoons back in mississippi that did $2000 in damage to my yard digging for grubs or something.

best snake kills I've witnessed? buddy of mine hit a copperhead on a flat rock from about 15 yards with a stone. we were crossing a bridged canyon at a golf course.
I hit a copperhead as it was swimming in a creek from about the same distance with a rock near Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri. it was a head shot, he looked at me before I nailed him, he sunk like a torpedoed ship.
my gf at the time was ****ed at me but we all know she'd have been ****ting her pants if we came across the thing on the trail.

I can't blame you. a few weeks ago I was out shooting baskets and the ball rolled between our garage and storage building. lying in the dirt was about a 6 foot long king snake. scared the snot outta me.

you are all wrong, if you are in OK that was a Great Plains rat snake (Elaphe guttata emoryi http://michaelcravens.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/img_4111.jpg

If you are East of the mississippi that was a corn snake, (Elaphe guttata guttata)
http://www.fresnochaffeezoo.com/images/corn-snake.gif

They have multiple color derivatives, but they eat mice. If you want a good identifier for venomous (not poisonous, and yes there is a difference) snakes snakes in OK always have slit shaped pupils. The only snake that can kill you outright in OK is the eastern coral snake, which is only in the eastern coral snake, which has teeth so small they cant penetrate leather glove. Granted all venomous snake bites deserve medical attention, but hter are basically 4 venomous snakes in OK, the cottonmouth, whcih can be mistaken for water snakes unless you look at their eyes (water snakes also are way more aggressive and produce a foul musk), copperheads, coral sankes and the rattlesnake species. All of these have diamond shaped heads and slit pupils.

The fear of snakes astonishes me. honestly the head of the largest snake in ok is barely bigger than your big toe, how much damage do you think that could do to you? Man look it up on the internet before you just kill it. the same types of venomous species in OK are the same for the entire US.

You didnt need to kill that snake. If you would have let it alone it would have disappeared and you probably never would have seen it again. The same goes for if it was venomous, although I understand not wanting to have venomous snakes around your kids etc...

The best thing about snakes is watching your neighbor's wife come upon one when she's mowing. Much shrieking, hopping backwards (in a futile attempt to get both feet off the ground at the same time) and waving of the arms (in a futile attempt to perhaps fly or appear frightening). When watched from afar, there is no better humor. Like a good neighbor, I laughed and pointed and laughed even harder when she saw me.

My neighbor had the same reaction when she saw my snake.

It's the kind of snake that you should pick up, and carry back over to the woodpile or woods and let go.

People with the "every snake is a bad snake" mentality are nimrods. Of the highest order.

Put me in a room full of snakes and I'll look over each one and try to figure out what kind they are.

Put me in a room full of spiders or scorpions and watch me scream like a little girl.

Snake's I've had in captivity:

Blotched Watersnake (also known as broad banded water snake)
Diamondback Watersnake (stinky and aggressive)
California Kingsnake : the most awesomest pet snake a dude can get
Graham's crayfish snake: found plenty of those in the creeks at Quail Creek when I was a kid.
Mexican milksnake (or somethin' like that) looks like a coral snake.
Prairie Kingsnake - also caught on the Quail Creek golf course.
Bullsnake
Ringneck: haven't seen one in years. They used to be found under every rock in Edmond. They are hard to keep alive in captivity.
