Actually, Rip wears it because any future facial injuries like broken noses or cheekbones could have serious medical repercussions for him since he's had so many already. There's a lot of really sensitive stuff right there, you know, behind his face.

I haven't read all of the replies to see if anyone said it. But for as long as he plays basketball he will have to wear his face mask. He has minimal cartilage in his nose after the many breaks it's had and the next one without a mask could cave the center of his face in.
