View Full Version : Hey Air Force types

So yesterday, I was out golfing poorly, and about every ten min. a fighter jet would fly overhead at a fairly low altitude. It seemed that they were flying in a sort of a circular pattern. Either way, I thought this was odd because we only have a refueling wing of the Air National Guard in Lincoln, and the pattern seemed to indicate they were flying there instead of Offut. What's the deal with this?

Hell if I know...at Randolph, we have a HUGE flying training wing...and they do that crap ALL THE TIME!!! My dorm room is right next to the T-38 engine run up area...and it irritates the **** outta me that they do engine tests at 10 PM nearly every freaking night!

Heh, I was just about to ask if you were gofling in Bellevue (or Papillion for that matter). I think they are still doing some work on one of the runways at Offutt and redirecting some of the traffic to the Air National Guard.

They're called "overhead patterns." It is a visual approach designed for tactical aircraft that allows a relatively large number of jets to be safely recovered while keeping them very close to the airdrome. It's flown based on visual references on the ground. I presume there is a runway close to where you were playing pasture pool?

Yes, I was a couple miles south of the Lincoln Airport/Air Guard base. If they are working on Offut, and redirecting through Lincoln that would likely be what they are doing. Usually, there aren't smaller planes flying around Lincoln unless it's air show time, or they brought in something cooler than the refueling planes to do the football game flyover.

Yah...an F-16 is almost as loud as a T-38...but the Talon beats it by about 15 dB's. F-4 is actually quieter than an F-16...go figure.

I'd of never thought that. Phantoms are noisy as hell. Loudest I have heard, was a B1 come by low & slow & then pull an almost vertical climbout. It literally shook the ground.

Since you're at Randolph, my wife always wants to know what those trainers are doing. They fly over my place (about 25 miles out in the boonies from Randolph) all the time. Sometimes in pairs, sometimes flying with a big (135?) jet in formation. Are they practicing escort, or refueling?

You need to spend some time around real jets. nothing competes w/ a B-1B. Actually a U-2 is suprisingly loud as well.

well, lets see if this is where we want the Army headed - I had a student come into my office earlier this year telling me she needed her grades and such because she was dropping out of school - because she could then join the Army...then talking to her recruiter, they essentially recommended this option to her - drop out, then we'll send you to a school to ensure you pass the GED, then we'll send you to basic...so yeah, I guess technically they have to have a GED - but really, they are recruiting drop outs...

they aren't really worried about that. especially combat arms. all they need you to be is competant, healthy and willing to listen to orders the rest will take care of itself. by the way, i doubt seriously they will take a drop out unless they score higher on the ASVAB. as i recall, you must have about 7 points more per test to be considered for enlistment if you are a dropout.

if they do join up with combat arms, your military service will ALMOST guarantee that a college will take a chance on you when you get out.. just personal experience. i think the army is getting a bad rap here. army standards really haven't dropped all that much. it's just that there are a lot of people out there talking about low entrance standards now as opposed to 20 years ago etc.

it's still a good system. its freedom of choice and no drafts. ask olevet about that.....

Yup, several times. 'Cept the USAF wouldn't take me at that time until a few of my speeding tickets were older. When the flyboys came and had to stay in our old barracks on Ft. Bliss they got some kind of $$ kicker for staying in substandard housing or some such. Mebbe they were pulling our legs. I do know that we never stayed in 4-star hotel accomodations like they did. One of my roomies at OU was in the USAF reserve. They went to their ann'l training somewhere and it rained so they didn't put up any tents and stayed in hotels instead. WTF?!

What was the group in the Vietnam Era that were accepted with marginal intelligence scores, sorta borderline retarded if memory serves. It was called "___(fill in the blank with some d00d's name____'s 100,000" or something. Like "Johnson's 100k" maybe?

lol i would have loved to been able to get in touch with you when we got back to germany then. I managed to disable two of our three governors and got the tank up to around 55 mph. I heard the thrid one was somewhere on the engine and was the big one. at 1500 horsepower we could have been running for pinks :)

seriously though, we saw film on the m1s before we went to the sand in 90. they showed a digital read out on the right side of the screen and an m1 accelorating both treads DISINTIGRATED at 88 MPH.......

the loudest thing I heard at Altus was the KC-135 tanker...converted boeing 707. Back in the early '80's the engines were just horrendously loud. they've been fitted with newer engines since then that are much quieter.

Being out on the open ocean with overcast skies following a carrier during flight ops is quite an amazing experience. A few dozen F-14s, F-18s, and A-6s flying around without any real noise restrictions definitely gets your attention.
