So I have their album Elephant and I've had it for several years. But probably about 2 years ago I stopped listening to it. For whatever reason I just convinced myself I didn't like it. Then I got Get Behind Me Satan and fell in love with that album. So I recently listened to Elephant again and remembered how awesome that album was. Knowing that I loved a few of their songs off their earlier albums, I decided to just go ahead and get each album

They're all dang good with lots of great songs. So, to those of you who are White Stripes fans...what are your top 10 songs of theirs? I'm still trying to work out my list.

I really never thought they were really anything but a Novelty when I first saw them.

The thing is...they have a great thing going and they are very talented.

If I still bought CDs...I'd buy one or two of their discs...

IMO, Get Behind Me Satan is their best. And it's important to know that I love Elephant. I think De Stijl is also right up there with Elephant.

ST: I kinda thought the same thing when I first saw them. When BlindCajun first introduced me to them I kinda thought "eh, they're too gimmicky." But then I really got into their sound. And they have so many different sounds. And they're all good.

It's hard for me to make this list right now because I only have access to GBMS and Elephant and there are a few I'm going to need to listen to again from the other albums to get a solid ranking.

These are probably my top ones from Elephant:

I Want to be the Boy to Warm Your Mother's Heart
Ball and Biscuit
Hardest Button to Button (probably a top 10 overall)
Little Acorn
Hypnotize

And my top ones from GBMS:

Blue Orchid
My Doorbell
Forever for Her (Is Over For Me)
Little Ghost (definitely in my top 10 overall)
The Denial Twist
Take, Take, Take (also probably in my top 10)

Some that come to mind from the other albums that might battle for top 10 status:

Hello Operator
Your Southern Can Is Mine
Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground
Fell in Love with a Girl
We're Going to be Friends
Seven Nation Army
Black Math
The Air Near My Fingers
Hotel Yorba
I'm Bound to Pack it Up
Astro
Now Mary

I just heard Icky Thump, the single that's been released from their upcoming album. I love it. Very cool. And different from what they've done...which I kinda thought would be hard for them. Kinda has some industrial-sounding and eastern/India-sounding parts. Sorta late-Zep/Robert Plant-ish. Does that make any sense?

Brawny White Stripes Bust Out Burly New Material At Nashville Warm-Up Gig

Band airs jagged tracks from new LP, Icky Thump, at first U.S. gig since '05.

by Teri vanHorn

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Jack White manhandled his guitar like some kind of evangelical beast, ranting red-faced about drinkin', immigration and prostitution.

But he wasn't addressing the crowd with the lyrics to "Icky Thump," the new single and title track from the White Stripes' forthcoming album. The song's jagged riffs and verbal bluster were aimed at his bandmate, Meg.

Throughout much of the White Stripes' 80-minute set here on Friday night, Jack faced Meg like he was in the midst of an interrogation. Undaunted, she returned his focus with equal intensity, thrashing away with her head cocked to the right as if to say, "Is that all you got?"

Things can get a little nasty when brother and sister play together.

The duo — who aren't really siblings despite a career of claiming so — used the impromptu show at the Cannery Ballroom to preview material from their sixth full-length, which is due June 19 (see "White Stripes Reveal Icky New Album Details"). The gig, which reportedly sold out in six minutes after being announced on their Web site, was their first U.S. show since December 2005, and their first in Nashville in nearly six years.

"How's my new hometown doin'?" Jack asked. The singer moved to Nashville last year from Detroit, after spending time in Music City in 2004 to work on Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose. The members of White's other band, the Raconteurs, some of whom were in attendance Friday, also reside in this country-music mecca. Perhaps in tribute, the pair opened with a cover of Hank Williams' "Tennessee Border," which drew endearing applause.

The show was further proof of what the album's first single suggests: That the White Stripes are emerging from their hiatus heavier and louder than ever. Clad in a tight black T-shirt, Jack is sporting a buffed-up physique that seems designed to make that point, as though his biceps are bulging from tossing 10-ton riffs around all day. Unlike the eclecticism found on their last album, 2005's Get Behind Me Satan, which dabbled with marimba, funk and country, what the Stripes showed of Icky Thump underscored the "thump," with sludgy guitar and wicked riff-rock explosions that peak with soaring flourishes. "I'm Slowly Turning Into You" would transform into a stoner-rock jam were it not for the brief verses that lend a semblance of structure.

As a performer, Jack is a band of his own, rotating guitars and switching among five microphones positioned about the stage. Still, he clearly enjoyed being back with his partner, frequently strolling over to Meg's side for a game of call-and-answer, or their unique brand of frantic interplay. While Meg is known to take over the mic for a song or two in concerts, the only time she did so on Friday was for a charming duet on Loretta Lynn's "Rated X." Looking demure in a black-and-white polka-dot blouse and red '50s scarf, she appeared as satisfied on the sideline as she was eager for a showdown.

As is customary in a White Stripes show, the duo's sudden drum-and-guitar skirmishes came in the most unexpected places on Friday night. Their cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" began gently enough, only to reach a breaking point as Jack raved wildly and implored under fiery red lights: "Please don't take him even though you can!" he wailed. The finale, "Seven Nation Army," accelerated throughout to reach warp speed in its final verse. The crowd's beat-keeping handclaps could hardly keep up.

When the White Stripes toned it down, as they did for a couple of Icky Thump-ers, it reinforced the tether they have on both the music and performance as a whole. "Effect and Cause," a heavy metal jingle of sorts, featured Jack musing, "If you're headed to the grave, you don't blame the hearse." Later, "A Martyr for My Love for You," was downright tender, culminating with Jack yearning, "I hope you appreciate what I do."

For the thousand people who showed up on short notice and were cheering wildly at the special gift White had just bestowed upon his new hometown, the statement was rhetorical.

The White Stripes will appear at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee on June 17, and will kick off their North American tour on June 24 in Burnaby, British Columbia.

The White Stripes' set list, according to Warner Bros. Records:

White Stripes Give In-Store Performance — At Record Shop That Doesn't Really Exist

Jack Black gives surprise intro: 'Are you all ready for a rip-snorting humdinger?'

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — If you think the White Stripes are a band that likes to sit still, then you don't know Jack.

Following one of the best-received performances at Manchester, Tennessee's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival on Sunday (see "Bonnaroo Recap: White Stripes, Police, Lily Allen Bring Heat To Already Scorching Fest") and a raucous New York record release show on Tuesday, the Stripes brought their Icky Thump-ness to the West Coast on Wednesday night with a special in-store performance at the famed former Tower Records on the Sunset Strip. While the store has been vacant since Tower went out of business last year, the Stripes temporarily transformed it into "Icky Thump Records," fully decked out in White Stripes signage, CDs and merch.

"It's become abandoned, sadly, so we're resurrecting it today and this week, selling some real records here again," frontman Jack White said. He told MTV News that the idea came about when he and bandmate Meg White were trying to figure out a way to make tangible music more readily available in an age of digital downloads. "Holding a record in your hands, especially a vinyl, if you can, that means so much more than this fast-forward, disposable attitude towards music," White said.

"Cigarette girls" selling White Stripes candy canes and buttons outside greeted fans, all of whom had an Icky Thump album in their possession. The 200-plus people who attended had secured their spots after purchasing the new album on midnight Tuesday at Icky Thump Records, and a handful of KROQ radio contest winners were along for the fun.

The lucky fan at the front of the line was Courtney Knight. "I got really sunburned waiting 17 hours on Monday to come to get tickets to this, so I'm really jazzed about seeing them — it's my first time," said the fan, whose sunburn blended perfectly into the sea of red, white and black outfits worn by people waiting in line.

Another fan, John Reynolds, was fully decked out in a black suit, bright red tie and black pinstripe hat. His choice of wear was both fanatical and practical. "I'm colorblind, so it's always hard to find things to wear. But vibrant red is one thing I can see, and putting that with black and white was perfect," he said.

Inside Icky Thump Records, the band eagerly waited to play fans the new material, which drew raves at Bonnaroo and in New York days earlier. "We're seeing a response to songs that people don't really know," White said. "It's the first time they're hearing them, and they're responding, so that's great. We're going out there and testing and see what songs work live and which ones we can change up."

At around 8:30 p.m., with fans inside, Jack finally strolled onstage — well, a Jack, that is. "I'm the other Jack," said Jack Black, who gave a surprise introduction. As the crowd went nuts, he barked, "Are you all ready for a rip-snorting humdinger?"

The frenzied crowd got even crazier when the Stripes finally hit the stage and tore through the Icky Thump title track. You wouldn't know it was a brand-new tune judging by the amount of fans singing along, especially during the middle part: "La la, la la la la la la la la la laaa laaa laaa."

Fans across North America are getting their own chance to sing along for the coming months as the Stripes trek extensively through the U.S. and Canada. (It's their first time in Canada, and they're hitting every province.) White said the band hopes to book dates in Mexico too.

The Icky Thump tour is a series of firsts for the twosome. "We're playing the states we haven't played in before in America — there's 16 left — and it's our 10th anniversary this year, so it's sort of a present to us as well," White said. "We love playing in places we haven't played in before."

So if you've never seen the White Stripes play near you, start practicing your "La la, la la la la la la la la la laaa laaa laaa's."

Thanks for bringing this thread back up.

I'm listening to it right now. Rhino gave me a link, God bless him, to an mtv website that was streaming the album a week before it's release. I don't know how many times I've listened to it since then.

Of course Icky Thump, the song, rocks. I think it's my second favorite on the album, a close second to Catch Hell Blues.

300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues is probably third.

The rest are all jockeying for position. Conquest sounds very "Cake-ish" to me and Effect and Cause reminds me of Beck's Sissyneck.

I just got tired of all the props they were getting for a few years that made them out to be some sort of paradigm shift. They don't do ANYTHING that hasn't been done before. Hell, half of their songs sound like some lost experimental album by Led Zeppelin.

But over the past few years I have gained a real appreciation for just how hard they rock.

Too bad you're not in OKC. There's a ONE PIECE (http://www.myspace.com/ephb) here that does it nearly as well. It's crazy.

Dinnent like this one. :( Outstanding guitars, nothing else was catchy to me, though. To each his/her own, though... that's why there's 200 other CDs on the shelf, I guess.

He makes all of that racket with, like, a guitar, a kick drum, a snare, a high-hat, and some sort of weird electronic sampling/distortion device attached to his kit. Did I mention it's CRAZY??!?

I concur about the Black Keys. Saw them a few months ago in a room with about 300 people. Incredible.

that sounds awesome.

It was. And for KC//CRIMSON -- EPHB is actual going to be in Lawrence with another great OKC band, Student Film, on July 6, according to his MySpace.

Yeah, there are times that you almost think you're listening to some Zep when the Stripes are playing. But to be fair, you could say the same thing about most of Zep's early stuff ("this has all been done before.") In fact, a lot of Zep's early stuff was actually just cover songs that they just turned into blistering ****ing rock.

So, yeah, not everything the Stripes do is brand new, but it's certainly not the norm either. They are one of the more innovative groups out there...especially when you talk about bands that your average joe has heard of before.

But I'll have to check out some of these other groups you mentioned.

not to hate but Student Film = zzzzzzzz......
it might've had something to do with them actually opening for Eagles of Death Metal (huh?) at the opolis, but it figures cuz that whole opolis/norman scene is one big yank-fest.

and since we are on the 2-piecer band tip, i'll admit i'm not a big fan of the local stuff around here, but Son of Sam Walton was about the only thing that i can remember that i've actually come away enjoying.

was that in December? i have no idea how many people were there, i was like 2 feet from Dan Auerbach the whole show

they kick *** live, but the White Stripes are better

Wolfmother is also highly recommended after last night... Cain's has kicked my *** the last week, they have had some great bands there lately

I forgot that you were there. After seeing that in print, it made me re-think the number I put down. It might have been fewer people than that.

the whole place was nuts as they tried to destroy the place when they closed with The Joker and the Thief. it was completely wild. White Unicorn really stood out as well.

Wolfmother IS good. Some of their songs remind me a lot of Soulfood 76. I dunno if any of you've heard of them, but they were a Christian rock band that put out a few albums in the mid-90's. Some Wolfmother songs sound like they've come right off a SF76 album.

Catch Hell Blues and Icky Thump are pulling away from the pack for me on this album. It's not that I don't like the rest, just that those two are great. 300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues is about halfway between those two and the pack.

Anybody have any thoughts on the new White Stripes album?

;)

Actually, once I get a little burned out on this album, I plan to check out some of the other bands on here. Give me a few songs I should check out first (I'm already familiar with Wolfmother).

Went and bought it last night for no particular reason. Haven't really started breaking it down yet, but I'm digging the first two songs on the album so far.

Little Cream Soda is a jam. Catch Hell Blues is a jam. Lots of people have hated on Conquest, but I really like it. I'm weird that way.

Also really like, Bone Broke, Rag and Bone, I'm Slowly Turning Into You, and A Martyr For My Love For You.

Whole album is great.

i haven't broken it down really, i've just listened to it from start to finish a few times and haven't heard a song i'd want to skip or anything

i like Conquest, it kinda reminds me of Green Hornet or something. sounds like it would work in a Tarantino movie

TopDawg

Good call on the Tarantino front.

Little Creme Soda is cool.

Rag & Bone needs to be listened to at a high volume. There are parts where he reminds me of Mitch Hedberg.

I was telling my friend that Bone Broke is the most "average" White Stripes song on the album. Not that the quality of it is average, but that it's the song that sounds the most like a typical White Stripes song (if there is such a thing).
