The subject of Dog Pounds make me sad, so I hereby officially protest this thread. :P

I have a Bassett Hound. They are one of the dumbest dog species but have great sense of smell. Mine, on the other hand has been declared "technically retarded" by the vet. It seems that his skull calcified before it fully formed and his brain is about 2/3's of the size it should be. He is the dumbest dog you will ever see. Prettiest dog though, only 2 colors and his whole body is one solid caramel color. Brutally dumb though.

This is my boy Harley. His first owners bought him as a pup, and then they didn't think he was cute as a full grown. He's a key part of our family.

Our other dog is a mix of border collie and flat coat retriever... we think.

His name is Hank is he is 95 lbs of love and loyalty.

The GREAT majority of "dumb" dogs are merely reflections of their owners' inability to communicate with and understand them. I had a bassett who figured out that if he acted dumb no one would ask him to do anything. He played it to the hilt but he listened and responded when I spoke. Dumb? I think not. Class Clown? Without a doubt.

Lots of truth to that. Bassets are very "type B" personality types and normally do not get too worked up over what their human master may want him to do from time to time. Basset's are capable of being very willful - especially if they calculate they are out of easy range from you.
I've seen dumb Bassets and they have always been of the undersized inbred puppy mill category (although these too were lovable companion animals). Our Bassett was a great dog and very smart. He had great natural hunting instincts as well as knowing when I was about to give him a bath or trim his toe nails (he would creep upstairs and hide at the conversational mention of the word "bath" if he was in ear shot).

Bo the Bassett lived a great life to the age of 15 1/4 years. 7-10-91 - 8-31-06 I really miss him.

Wait... Now I remember. I definitely consider him a tough Basset.

I wholeheartedly agree. I had a great Basset named Bismark that was not the self starter type, but he knew what the hell I was talking about when it mattered and would clear out when he heard phrases that applied to him in a not so good way. Being a college student when he was young probably didn't help as I had no idea when it came to really training a dog.
They are very focused dogs on what they are good at- tracking by scent. They are also EXTREMELY sweet and affectionate dogs. Poor Biz and another Basset that we adopted (found) left this earth before their time via poison. I have never fully recovered from it. RIP Bismark and Flower. YOu are still missed.
And I agree that Setters are pretty damn dim.

We had an Irish Setter that we rescued from the in-law's neighbor's yard. No food or water. They never looked for her. Beautiful, loyal and loving, but not particularly smart.

Here's the one I would like to get next:

Does anyone else have a Shiba Inu? We bought our Shiba (whom we named
Sheba) about 10 months ago. I am yet to meet anyone else who has one. She is the most beautiful and friendly dog. She's cream/white colored which is considered a "defect" by all the major kennel clubs. I think they can go jump off a cliff. And Shibas are the cutest puppies!!
